Some great ideas floating around about supporting EU products and services.

Right now it's not feasible to switch 100% over to fully EU made but every little helps!

With all of these US companies supporting actively hostile policies, making the switch now helps everyone and denies them revenue and advertising money.

Some more great ideas here:

For my own sake I'm planning on:
* Selfhosting services where possible
* Eating at local cafes and restaurants
* Swapped to Tony's Chocolonely
* Booking holidays with Eurocamp or local alternatives
* Look into moving to Proton Mail

Ideally I'd like to remove Netflix but at the moment that's not on the table for my family (not my choice 😅) but hopefully I can convince everyone to cancel for a few months and renew when there's actually something worth watching.

@mer I just saw that, thanks for the suggestions though!

@Allyn Hi Allyn, following the BuyFromEU movement as well.

Why do you prefer Proton Mail to others like Mailbox?
Proton from what I understand is Swiss, and Mailbox is german a member state of EU.

@shooshadoo I didn’t put that list together, I found it on the above Reddit channel. It seems like there have been a few updates too.
As for Proton, a bunch of people replied here to say the CEO is a Trump supporter so I’ll be rethinking that too. Maybe Mailbox is a good solution.
I haven’t migrated from gmail yet anyway.

@Allyn
I am trying out mailbox so far and it's been working fine. Actually amazed that the adblocker doesn't detect any trackers unlike gmail does.

Mailbox has a webmail version, but if you prefer a windows email client, I am looking at the moment at emclient.com.

It is a pretty client, EU product as well. Has a free option, or if you prefer, it also has a 1 time payment for extra functions.

If you don't want "pretty client", there's also this claws-mail.org/index.php. It's also EU

www.emclient.comeM Client - Client de messagerie et logiciel de calendrier pour Windows et macOSCe client de messagerie gratuit doit être installé sur votre bureau. eM Client est tout simplement génial.

@Allyn Like the idea but it has a few issues at first glance: Namely, recommending Proton when their CEO came out praising Trump and no mention of Signal, even if it is US-based, as Meredith’s policy is that they would rather leave a market than capitulate to backdoors.

@aral I see this as the start of something - rather than a finalized list.
The alternatives are also very Nordic-centric from what I can see, so many aren't applicable to me but I did see some chatter on /r/Ireland about starting an Irish version of this list.

Over COVID there were some great lists of Irish craft suppliers for Christmas presents, so I'm hoping we'll be able to build out a good regional list of alternatives.

Nice to know about the Proton CEO too!

@Allyn good list. some suggestions to add:

Services: NextCloud
Collaboration: Element (Matrix), Jitsi
Electronics: Jolla
Fast Food: Hesburger

@Allyn I mean...good luck dislodging WhatsApp. Apart from that, interesting list ot look at.

@pictor I’ve some friends who adamantly well not use it and use signal.
I’ve also got friends and family WHO use Viber, which is Japanese, AFAIK.

So there’s some hope. Although over the last few years most of my chats have gone to WhatsApp from Viber, which I mainly used.

@pictor anyway, strive for progress - not perfection! 😄

@Allyn
Thank you. I would still like to add some
Maps : Mapy.cz
Stream: Voyo(sk)
food and snacks: jojo(cz)
drinks : kofola(cz), almdudler(a), fritzkola(de)

I didn't know about the phones, but i will count on it.
I would like to add, that you dont need fast food chains. You can support local fastfood freelancers. Like kebabs, asian bistros and indian restaurants.
