Historians, an unusual (?) one for you
According to my parents, my great-grandparents (Strabane at this point, I think, but not 100%) were married following a possibly obscure tradition called ‘a compromising’
The gist of it is that for some reason they couldn’t marry so the mock sight of them heading out together overnight in plain sight was deliberately staged making marriage the only answer to such a scandal
I’ve never heard of this since
@CJohnston @TarynDeVere Maria Luddy and Mary O'Dowd's 'Marriage in Ireland 1660-1925' may have something on this https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/marriage-in-ireland-16601925/0E511A39599749BE60C57D187571B63E
@petergray47 @TarynDeVere Thank you
Appreciate it
@CJohnston @TarynDeVere In north of Ireland runaway marriages involved a couple who wished to be married going to a friend's house to stay, forcing their families to negotiate on conditions. I suppose this technically compromised their virtue. But many marriages happened this way, the 'runaway' being partly ritual.
@clodagh_tait @TarynDeVere thank you! Appreciate the reply and your expertise
