Europe is buying russian gas at an unprecedented rate in 2025, spending billions of dollars the kremlin can use to fund its war in just weeks after the end of a major transit agreement raised hopes the continent may break its dependency

Data collected by commodities intelligence firm Kpler and analyzed by POLITICO reveals that in the first 15 days of 2025, the European Union's 27 countries imported 837,300 metric tons of liquefied natural gas from russia.

POLITICO · EU devours Russian gas at record speed despite cutoffBy Gabriel Gavin

@EugeneMcParland The ironic thing is the greenies who opposed nuclear power are responsible for empowering Russia.

Oh wait, the Soviets funded the Western green movement. So it all makes sense now.

@mike805 @EugeneMcParland You mean the well-known “greenies” Gerhard Schröder and Angela Merkel? Those who invited Russian gas right into Germany?

Gerhard Schröder was *chairman*of*the*board* of Nordstream and Rosneft. No “greenie” forced him to take that job.

@ahltorp @EugeneMcParland Well yeah Angela Merkel has wrecked Germany, and ought to be sent to Nuremberg. Getting dependent on Russian gas, French electricity, and imported cheap labor was very stupid.

America should have vetoed the whole Russian gas thing back during the Cold War when that was possible. We somehow thought economic ties would prevent war? It didn't the last two times that was tried.

@EugeneMcParland Germany really need to get their shit together when it comes to energy. Probably when it comes to a lot of other stuff as well.

@EugeneMcParland I don't know if the misleading tone of the article is due to incompetence or worse, but Europe is NOT buying more gas from Russia than ever. Quite the opposite, actually:

@jmarnesto @EugeneMcParland Your graph is in cubic metres. How do you compare LNG and gas from Nordstream then? And how do you compare that graph with the figures measured in tons?

@ahltorp @EugeneMcParland When you measure LNG in bcm you are actually measuring the amount of gas that it will provide when converted back to gaseous form. Therefore, the comparison is perfectly valid. For reference, 1 million tonnes (LNG) = 1.379 bcm (gas)

@jmarnesto @EugeneMcParland How about you stop counting it in the non-unit bcm and then stop burning it?

@jmarnesto
Reflexive replies bashing "the Greens" and Germany writ large. Coming from Axel Springer, who is agitating in favor of AfD and Elon Musk. Let's treat their "facts" with a grain of salt.
@EugeneMcParland

Yeah, that title was quite misleading. Record LNG imports From Russia. Not record natural gas imports.

@EugeneMcParland thank you, #Germany for shutting down nuclear generation! 🙏
Imagine prioritising having extra 2°C in one's apartment over 20,000,000 lives. 🙄

@EugeneMcParland The headline is a little bit misleading. The article is talking about LNG, not total gas. And many EU countries have divested from Russian gas so it is not quite fair to lump all them together.
