"To Donald #Trump: #Greenland is not for sale"
(#Danish politician Anders Vistisen has been told off for using profane language while discussing the new US administration in Strasbourg's European parliament.)

It's worth noting that this is another right wing populist. If Greenland belongs to anyone, it belongs to those who live there. And they certainly do not seem to consider themselves to be Danish.
Norwegians settled in Greenland in 986, thrived for a few centuries, and then for whatever reason they disappeared in the 15th century during Norway's union with Denmark. When Norway got out of that union in 1814, the Danes kept Greenland, despite no Danes or Norwegians living there.

A fun historical footnote is that the Thule people, who are the ancestors of the contemporary population, only arrived around 1300. So if the Norse population in Brattahlid had stuck around, they would have been the oldest population group on the island. We're not sure why they left, but one theory is climate change.
In Denmark, there's wide acceptance that if Greenland wants independence, it should be realized. But there is, of course, no way in hell the island is for sale.

@EugeneMcParland I guess strong boy Vistisen said this AFTER Frederikson's phone call with D. T. and AFTER D. T.'s not mentioning Greenland in his inaugural speech.

It doesn't have to be sold - if it's deciding for independency, then it's government is like a small town in a global superpower fight. For billionaires it's very easy to influence their politics then.
