Complexity in simplicity
The idea for the 'woven' #ring came while I was still a student of the late Samir Mattar in his #JewelleryMaking course in Urca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
I went away with some scraps and basic tools to my grandparents' farm, and worked with what I had at hand.
Complexity in simplicity
36 years later, the technique has evolved, but the spirit of simplicity is still strong in me. I aim to use one long ribbon or a few long ribbons of different widths. No need to use the silver scraps anymore
Nevertheless, this technique I dedicated a large part of my life to evolve, also allows for very little wastage, as I got better and better in calculating how long the ribbons should be to start with.
Complexity in simplicity continued
Also tricky is to figure out what size the "skeleton" should be in order to achieve the correct #ring size at the end. Crucial for the wearer's comfort. And a great challenge!
@GurgelSegrillo That's gorgeous! Does it wear well?
@intransitivelie thank you Yes, this particular ring that tapers in the back allows for a wide front, while being quite comfortable. My thumb ring is the other design: same width all around, I wouldn't recommend having this one with too wide a width. But also it depends on the wearer's preferences - I don't keep anything in stock, I only make to order. Been selling them for over 3 decades, with many repeat commissioners. So long story short, yes!
@GurgelSegrillo Beautiful work.
@GurgelSegrillo Still gorgeous!
@intransitivelie much appreciated
@GurgelSegrillo that's beautiful!
@GurgelSegrillo how can I order one?
@CuriousBoi I've got an online shop, here's the link with most of the rings https://shop.gurgel-segrillo.com/collections/art-jewelry-rings (there's a note about a 3 month wait at the mo but I'm working on it! )
@GurgelSegrillo This is beautiful, you've given me *ideas*
@GurgelSegrillo as in, you might be hearing from me for a purchase early next year
@aisling_walsh awesome! it'll be a pleasure!
