If someone had said to me

"PJ, in 2023, AskJeeves style search engines will make a roaring comeback because human-curated searches will just be so much better and accurate than Google."

I'd have questioned your intellect and possibly your hygiene.

And yet here we are.

@ch0ccyra1n

Doing 0 for 3 on some searches I just did.

@Homebrewandhacking
It's intended to search for classic and classic-style sites. One could self-host it though and have it index whatever sites they want.

@ch0ccyra1n

Sorry my friend, those are words you have written and I have read.

Like sites for classical literature?

@Homebrewandhacking
I mean sites from the 90s and sites in the style of those. However, I've been thinking of building my own search engine using the same software that's more of a general engine (meant for searching pretty much any type of site)

@Homebrewandhacking Is anyone who thinks still using Google Search? Just awful AI-promoted nonsense. Brave Search is not too awful, and DuckDuckGo is tolerable. Still hunting for a really good reliable one.

@bytebro

I use DuckDuckGo. The chap endorses various kinds of unpalatable nonsense.

Quite frankly you can't throw a rock in computing without hitting someone with dreadful views that they believe they arrived at ab initio but wildly, happily, reinforce the status quo and their position in it.

@Homebrewandhacking Sure. Currently I still use the Brave browser on laptop and phone, obvs with the ads and telemetry turned right off. Sooner or later I'll likely migrate to Firefox, but it's too ugly right now. There is however the Garuda version (DrgnFire or something?) which looks promising, but I doubt it'll be available for my phone...

@bytebro

Ah that's grand. You know yourself best.

@Homebrewandhacking Ah, now yer getting metaphysical and stuff. "I knows what I likes" though 🙂
