I wrote a lengthy piece of work on using antimagic, low level magic zones and wild magic to help take your game to higher levels without feeling "cheap".

GMs don't use wild magic because the 2014 implementation is stupid and doesn't scale. At 1st level a fireball is a TPK at 13th it's an inconvenience.
So just scale it.

@Homebrewandhacking I also like the idea of concentric zones of increasing intensity. Do you dare venture into the very core of the antimagic/wild magic field? It's a very tempting insanely rare item! And lots of deathbeasts in the way when your party abilities are suppressed...
Yeah. Magic gradients just innately fall out don't they? 
I haven't made the necessary tables yet because that's a lot of work and even more layout. But since people who've looked at it seem to like it, I might develop something more.
@Homebrewandhacking I also like the idea of the rare item being the thing that is holding the disruption in place. You pulled that sword out of the stone without having something else ready to keep the Weave pinned up the way it was? Congratulations on your first Unravelling Event! I hope you have lots of burn cream...

Larry Niven, before he went off the deep end, also wrote a story about a disk that consumed all the mana in a geographic area. So like that, but in reverse!
@Homebrewandhacking how about a legendary scrying orb, except it's only magic -because- it's the focal point of a knot in the weave. Take it off its pedestal and not only does the weave snap apart like a rope breaking under strain, but the orb is now... a rock.

@Homebrewandhacking as soon as the monkey grabs the giant ruby, everything goes to shit and they barely survive - and the ruby melts. Seemed a pretty apt parallel!
It's clearly been too long since I watched Aladdin.
