Man from Atlantis (1977) was the first of four successful TV-movies, to be followed by an unsuccessful series. It's a reasonably interesting story about a water-breathing man from Atlantis stuck in the modern world. Features a fine mad scientist.

Mark Maguire

@d4doome I didn’t realise the sequence of TV movies leading to a series. I only remembered it as a series, of which I was a big fan at the time (I think I had an annual).

@MarkMaguire @d4doome I remember how UTV always preceded broadcasts with warning that real people are unable to breathe underwater, even in bath. RTE didn't bother.

@d4doome @IanMoore3000 I’d totally forgotten that. 😂 I do remember being obsessed with webbed fingers as an adaptation. Also one of the only occasions in the 1970s when a TV hero was called ‘Mark’. I related.

@MarkMaguire I haven't seen the series and I've only seen the first TV-movie. The consensus seems to be that the TV-movies are a lot better than the series. I will eventually try to get around to watching the other movies and the series.

@d4doome I would probably be horrified if I rewatched it now from an adult perspective. Lots of TV and comics I loved as a kid ran only for a season or a few months. But in my child’s mind they went on for ages. Many of them were probably ended quickly for a good reason. I loved them as a kid anyway.

@MarkMaguire I watch an enormous amount of 1960s/1970s TV shows and I'm usually pleasantly surprised by how well they stand up. They're certainly better than anything made today. They're just more fun and more stylish.
