Started fiddling around my 42nd birthday.
No previous musical experience, very little music listening even.
Spontaneously decided to learn to play Irish Trad, picked the fiddle as the instrument.
It’s been a tough three years, it’s a hard instrument. Was close to tone deaf.
Yesterday I learned a full tune by ear in one day.
Tomorrrow I turn 45.
I’m proud of my progress, even if I still have a lifetime to go.
@PlasticJohnny I love this!!! I started playing Irish trad on anglo concertina around my 44th birthday, and I just turned 45! Best decision I've made in a very long time. I grew up playing clarinet, so I had a very rusty musical background, but it had been a very long time!
I, too, am working on learning music by ear! Getting better all the time.
Happy birthday, and enjoy the musical journey!
@ursaborealis that’s excellent! I love the concertina - such a wonderful instrument.
What are some tunes you’re working on and excited about right now?
Enjoy your journey as well, we seem to be journeying side by side. :-)
@PlasticJohnny This week I started figuring out Bean Pháidín, which is an absolute blast to play. Practicing to improve a chord-heavy arrangement of The Harp and the Shamrock, which is also a lot of fun but I'm struggling to make smooth chord transitions in some places! I'm obsessed with Carolan, so Planxty Irwin for a cheerful tune, and Eleanor Plunkett (in my opinion the most beautiful tune ever composed) when moody.
Forever working away at Port na bPúcaí, à la Tony MacMahon.
And yourself?
@PlasticJohnny excellent. I’m a fan of #RickBeato, who talks a lot about ‘ear training’ to learn new tunes. The objective, to be pitch perfect
