#Columbo 65 (1995) - 7/10
#GeorgeWendt and #RodSteiger are the guests. Wendt is bland, which hampers the episode. Steiger is great as a vengeful mobster. It's a pity he wasn't the murderer, as his scenes with #PeterFalk are terrific.
It's mostly a straightforward story, with plenty of clues for Columbo to find and annoy his victim/suspect with.
Towards the end, we enter an elaborate con that is being used to force the killer to confess. We know that what we are seeing is fake, but are we supposed to know?
If the episode is trying to fool us, then it's a miserable failure. But it seems to me that they've done enough foreshadowing to set things up. And if I'm reading it right, then they are playing fair with the viewers. (Well, the viewers who are paying attention anyway!)
On the whole, it's a passable two-hour movie. Far from being one of the best, it lacks spark but still stands as an above-average detective story.
It's the 9th (and final) script for the show by #PeterSFischer, who took his name off the credits. Also the 9th (and final) appearance on the show by #BruceKirby.
