Why do most PCs run #Windows? Is it because #Microsoft made a better #OperatingSystem? Or is it because they persuaded PC manufacturers to pre-instal Windows? #Microsoft gets paid for every new PC sale in the form of a Windows license, and OEMs are incentivized to sell more because it lowers their per unit costs and gets them better deals in the future.
Remember, you have a #choice.
#Linux #opensource #openSUSE #ArchLinux #LinuxMint #Ubuntu #RedHat #Fedora

@DrBobW_46

Maybe the fact that PC manufacturers have a market for PCs with Windows preinstalled, but nobody wants to buy PCs with Linux installed has something to do with it?

PC Manufacturers are persuaded to pre-install Windows by the profit imperative - not only is the customer demand there, the per-unit support costs are lower.

Yes, we have a choice, because Microsoft has helped create a vast market of commodity PCs that cost anywhere between €$£200 and €$£2000.

@Sliotar #Microsoft have created a lot of exposure by persuading #OEMs to pre-instal #Windows. Most newcomers to computers have never heard of #Linux, and think the only #choice is #Windows or #Apple.
But there are some companies pre-installing #Linux. #System76 #Entroware for example.

" have created a lot of exposure by persuading to pre-instal ".

Would you listen to yourself? OEMs have been pre-installing Windows for almost 30 years. OEMs don't need Microsoft
to persuade them, they pre-insall Windows because that's what sells.

There have been companies pre-installing Linux for years too. And, as they have no price advantage over vendors who sell Windows PCs, they cater to their niche audience of (self-supporting) true believers.

@Sliotar Sure. But 30 years ago, it was #Microsoft who approached the #OEMS. Now the #symbiosis is well and truly established.

@DrBobW_46

Your point being? People like you have been talking down to the (apparently) stupid people who "think the only is or " for over 20 years, and yet they still keep buying Windows PCs. Must be all those ads we keep (not) seeing on TV.

The bottom line is that Linux doesn't offer anything that the average computer user cares about. It's not cheaper, it's not easier to use, it's not easier to acquire.

You're a solution in search of a problem. Users don't care.

@Sliotar I hope I didn't say that #Windows or #Apple buyers are stupid, and I didn't intend to sound condescending.
My point was that #Microsoft achieved their dominant position by possibly shady business practices, rather than by building a superior product which could compete with other system on a 'level playing field'.

@DrBobW_46

Microsoft was found guilty of violating US antitrust law in 2000. That's 22 years ago (154 in dog years), and there are lots of people keeping a close eye on them all the time.

The fact is that Microsoft produces lots of products that can compete with other systems on a level playing field. Many true believers refuse accept that, but as Fr Jack used to say, "That would be an ecumenical matter". So go ahead, believe what you want to believe. It's what makes you happy, apparently.
