Tom Baker, in the 1970s, asked about the idea of a woman playing the Doctor.
The answer (“a good idea”) to the question is then expanded to consider the culture of the BBC and then just men of 1970s Britain in general.
@Tupp_ed That unfortunately is the feeling I got with what happened with Jodie Whittaker.
@Tupp_ed God I love Tom Baker.
Charming, progressive, funny, caring - genuinely the kind of person we need more of in the world.
@Tupp_ed They did Jodie Whittaker so dirty
@Tupp_ed Tom Baker was my first Doctor and his a special place in my heart. I'm glad that he is also one of the good guys.
I'm looking at you Gaiman. Such a disappointment.
@Tupp_ed I would have loved it if he’d had enough influence to push Lalla Ward as his replacement and she got the quality of writing that she deserved.
@MartyFouts @Tupp_ed as opposed to replacing Mary Tamm because he was going out with Lalla?
@Tupp_ed
“Very few men like women”
Tragically, that still seems to be the case today.
@susannelilith I mean, it’s not even how the show worked for its many decades.
It’s just wilfully reactionary and misses all of the basic tenets of the show.
I pay that sort of whining no heed!
@susannelilith Quite right, and apologies that, in my eagerness to refute the wrong thoughts of those outside our exchange, it appeared I was attributing them to you.
@Tupp_ed "And if they did get a female Doctor, they would direct it in such a way that it would be a caricature." That's exactly what happened to Jodie Whittaker, isn't it?
@Tupp_ed It's a very insightful text that could be written today as well
@Tupp_ed This is damn insightful. I feel like it explains some stuff with Dr. Who, but also both the best successes and worst failures of my relationships with women.
I actually like women, I think. Some women (who have liked me back) enjoy that. A few have found it unacceptable.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
50 years later, it has still improved little if at all - although I do see a lot of hope in the younger generation.
In the 1980s, when I was but a naive teen, I was at a con where he was the GoH and in the Q&A after his talk, I asked what he thought of a female doctor. I got booed by a number of audience members, but he squelched them and then said he thought it was a great idea.
I didn't take the booing too personally because I thought those guys were lame, and that things were going to get better. After all, the Doctor said so.
@Tupp_ed I think a lot of the reason he's always been portrayed as "mad" is because of stuff like this.
He just didn't give a shit what anyone thought of him, because Tom Baker was going to be Tom Baker, no matter what.
Speaking truth to power was part of who he was
@Tupp_ed Makes me sad that he died before they finally had one!
@freakazoid @Tupp_ed He is still alive.
@Tupp_ed Chris Bidmead was pushing for a female Dr Who in the 1980s, too.
@Tupp_ed misogyny was drilled into everybody after we 2, the women were forced back from the industrial world to the kitchen....
