Expanding on my earlier post: (https://mastodon.ie/@barcode/113952134328071036)
What any new user may be refer to by "Mastodon is good/rubbish/___"
- Any one of multiple instances with #mastodon as the URL (eg .social or .ie or .art or or or), or some abbrev of mastodon as the URL (eg mstdn.social)
- Their user experience on the above instance OR other servers on the above instances
1/?
- The Mastodon instance software's merits/demerit (compared to other instance software OR apps)
- Any social app with a forgettable name/branding that uses an elephant icon
- The Fediverse (a lot of blogs and journalists have made no distinction, I expect slop peddlers treat them interchangeably)
- OR just most visible differences between the Fediverse and their expectations of Like Twitter Without The Suck that they felt they were promised
2/?
- A famous metal band from the US that has been around since 2000.
- Every kind of Fediverse instance software THAT ISN'T MASTODON, but is presumed to be so by a user on a mastodon instance because of how the UI doesn't explicitly distinguish such posts as different.
- Any of the organisations or funding structures connected to the development of the instance software that is called Mastodon
3/?
- A like-minded group who'll (in practice) equate users and moderators of select Fediverse instance software that isn't Mastodon† as deserving of greater suspicion, open prejudice, or blocking.
† If you don't think this happens perhaps first check with Pleroma/Akkoma users and instance admins before dismissing this one.
4/?
- The Fediverse, as judged by what is visible to any Threads† user oblivious to... a lot. Including the concept of everyone on the Fediverse disgusted with the idea of federating with Threads.
† There will not be a comparable thread of posts on the naming of Threads. Anyone who approves of that choice of name, or would play Devil's Advocate in the matter is someone I hope to never encounter in my life.
5/?
- ...and it can also might refer to the Mastodon instance software itself. The code that has to run on a server somewhere.
I hope the documentation for Mastodon (Instance Software) is absolutely excellent because I expect the first time searching for a solution to a problem with it is hellish.
6/?
... 7/?
- Mastodon also gets described as a platform ( eg https://social.linux.pizza/@Stomata/113974020746415069 )
