The Howth gun-running involved the delivery of 1,500 Mauser rifles to the Irish Volunteers at Howth harbour in Ireland on 26 July 1914. The unloading of guns from a private yacht during daylight hours attracted a crowd, and the authorities ordered police and military intervention. Despite this the Volunteers evaded the security forces and carried away the arms.
@bullivant was that Childer's yacht Asgard?
@bullivant Um… Did they ever hear of “under the cover of darkness”? What a bunch of idiots in fairness.
@mark I think that there were a number of groups in Ireland at the time openly arming themselves and forming 'self-defence' units. For example, the Ulster Volunteer Force was formed in January 1913 to undergo military training and purchase arms.
@bullivant It’s crazy though, I’m sure getting caught bringing in those arms could be considered sedition or treason or some such. Not sure about the gun laws of the time, but I didn’t think you could bear arms then either.
