While #IanHislop is around I think we have a chance. He is so wonderfully good at destroying a terrible argument.
@jacqui76 His argument from his experience of miscarriages of justice through the years at Editor of Private Eye is important.
Patel on the other hand had nothing. The deterrence argument is obviously ridiculous - look at America.
He has done a great service to expose the faults in the justice system through his work in Private Eye.
Patel - really was clutching at straws especially when the audience laughed at her. She is a horrible human being.
@jacqui76 @bullivant Though to be fair, my opinion is most of what the Tories are doing is nothing to do with strategy or strength of argument, it's about optics and playing to an imagined crowd of "anti-woke" voters.
I am not sure the 'culture wars' & 'anti-woke' are gonna work quite as well in UK politics as it did in America - 4 very regions make up the UK with very different cultures already.
Also, Scotland/Wales and Northern Ireland are already detached from England & their politics...thanks to devolution.

Legislation, modern Abortion legislation and Irish Language legislation. I don't think there is any desire to give any of that up to satisfy people who have no clue what being 'woke' means.
I would rather get rid of the likes of #30pLee, #Baverman and the rest of bottom of the barrel that currently wears a Tory badge!
@jacqui76 @keptthereceipts I think that they are playing to the base and the Red Wall. They believe that things like the death penalty go down well in places like Stoke on Trent. They may well be right but it's not going to help them win the election because it alienates middle class voters in places like Tunbridge Wells.
When they have no actual achievements to promote, when they have ran out of ideas and all they have is the lies Johnson told them to keep them warm. They have to attack someone to deflect from their awfulness.
I yearn for the day when they are no longer in power. All of them are hateful

They are fighting for a shrinking number of voters who yearn for the good old days! (which is code for a time when there was more white faces)

Good argument in most cases, but still think it should be a mandatory sentence for being a tory MP. No chance of getting the wrong person there.

Once upon a time her level of studipity would have been restricted to the realms of the local pub, satirical comedy on telly like Rick Mayall and The New Statesman, or nutjob fringe politicians.
Now it's on serious telly and in positions of power.
