On 11th February 1990 Nelson Mandela was released from prison after 27 years. At the time US government considered Mandela a terrorist, and the African National Congress, a terrorist organisation. Mandela was only removed from the terrorist watch list by the US government in 2008.

@bullivant I remember watching his release live, broadcast by RTÉ.

@eibhear Must have been a powerful moment.

@bullivant South African modeled their system of Apartheid from U.S. Jim Crow and segregation laws. So did Germany in the 30s.

@celset2 Thank you for the reminder.

@bullivant When I listen to my Specials Greatest Hits CD (I don't do streaming) I still sing along loudly to Free Nelson Mandela as much as I did at the time. Remember a whole field full of people singing it as a festival. We never thought it would happen. Amazing it did and that he became President of SA.

@Beulah My daughter goes to a college where the song it the college's 'anthem'. It is sung at every dance and disco. Not sure if that is a good or a bad thing.

@bullivant I'm sure there ate much worse anthems they could choose. Can't remember us having an anthem in my student days at much more down market Leicester Poly but at school we always ended discos with Hi Ho Silver Lining.

@bullivant That it was. I remember that we watched nothing happening for about 2 hours, while the poor RTÉ commentator Cathal O'Shannon worked valiantly to fill the space, and then suddenly the screaming in the family sitting room "There he is! There he is!"

@eibhear Wow! An amazing memory to have.
