Phil Lynott died on 4 January 1986 aged 36 years old. After a requiem mass at Howth Parish Church, Lynott was buried in St. Fintan's Cemetery in Sutton, County Dublin. His memorial stone was inscribed: “Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas da anam (May God give peace to his soul)”.
