Ciarán Ferrie

Just three years after replacing their manicured front lawns with a wild flower meadow, Trinity College Dublin reports the emergence of rare orchid species in the heart of the city.

An incredible positive illustration of the benefits of allowing for biodiversity

I think this counts as a viral post on Mastodon - in just 48hrs I've got over 450 boosts and 500 favourites. I've never had anything like this level of engagement here before.

I wonder is this because of the recent inward migration or is it just that everyone likes a good news story 🤔

@ccferrie such a wonderful story. Makes you hopeful .

@ccferrie Pyramidal Orchids seem to be cropping up in lots of places now that we’re not razing every square inch of open ground at every opportunity. It may be that I’m just paying more attention now but I suspect it’s more than that because they are hard to miss if you are paying attention.

I’m pretty sure I snapped both of these on the same day in June - one in the Déise, the other in the uncut meadow in front of Castletown House in Celbridge.

@helvick @ccferrie I just spotted three on a small verge near a parking lot at UCD!

@helvick @ccferrie There were four in the centre median of the Malahide Road in Coolock until DCC mowed it at the weekend…

@ccferrie Clearly they don't have to operate under a HOA. Lucky them. My wife did something similar in our yard and it is wonderful, and there are those in the area that hate her for it. Good for them.

@ccferrie in my case i love meadows, and you don’t get these kind of news every day :D imagine the community of insects that settled there as well. Small (but good) win for biodiversity!🌿
