An amazing & deeply moving spent exploring country with Wayne Atkinson, elder of the Yorta Yorta people and aboriginal activist. Such beautiful landscapes with tragic histories, intimately connected with Wayne’s own ancestors and the ongoing struggle for land rights. An absolute privilege to spend the day hearing his stories and perspectives — and the many connections with Irish history.




Historians Peter Gray, Wayne Atkinson, and Val Noone in front of Cathedral & lands in Acheson, originally granted by Irishman Charles Gavan Duffy to aboriginals in 1859 before they were stolen away (again). Wayne wears a t-shirt featuring the aboriginal flag of Australia.
A poignant visit to the Coraderrk cemetery, resting place of hundreds of aboriginal peoples pushed out to reservations and the Coranderrk settlement, including Wayne’s own grandmother. Here three men stand in an Australian graveyard, examining a monument listing names of aboriginal people buried there.
