Tonight's "can he fix it" job. Data recovery from a #RAID mirrored disk set, fresh out of a dead #DLink #NAS enclosure. Only 1TB #SATA drives... Who knows
Already been paid with a jar of homemade #marmalade.
Bring it on!
Well, the #RAID left side HDD powered up in my USB dock. I was able to see all the partitions and heard no nasty noises. The partition that had all the data is raid formatted so I cannot simply mount it. Now researching #mdadm and software RAID so that I can safely mount this one disc of a mirror RAID set.
Yes, this is fun... Lovin' it!
Well, after some research, and a sprinkling of mdadm incantations, I have managed to --assemble 1 disk of this mirror #RAID through a USB SATA dock. Did have some fun with an md127 device cause a busy error, but a --stop sorted that.
Anyway, I now have the disk mounted and data is starting to copy off it! Yippee
Ok job done
650GB of data successfully copied off this mirror #RAID volume from a failed #DLink #DNS323 #NAS enclosure.
I have no idea how long it took... I went to bed and left it working. It had completed next morning with no errors or complaints.
Recovered data passed a smell test when I looked at it on my Win10 PC.
Perfect - if only everything was this easy in tech!
And for my efforts, I have been rewarded with the "dead" (maybe?) #DLink #DNS323 board. It was confessed that it was fine up until the power was accidentally removed... So I am suspecting a corrupt OS image, as the board looks like it is in perfect shape. I think I have identified a serial port I can solder wires onto. Maybe I will catch something if there is any boot at all?
Well, #soldering 4 wires has proved more difficult than I was expecting! To be fair the J1 pads are tiny, so I have had to use 30AWG wire. Anyway, lesson learnt - a magnifying headset with LED lights is now on order...
Need them too. I know I have a solder short, but I'll be damned if I can see it
My magnifying illuminated headset arrived today, and I am really pleased with it. I was able to easily inspect last night's #DNS323 board #soldering and see how bad it was, and I was then able to find and fix the short too! Will take practice to use them naturally, but they are so helpful I do not think I will solder without them now.
The only downside is that my family all laughed at me and agreed that I looked like a complete plonker!
@ilneill What make model is it?
