#AskMeAnything about IrishCycle or commuting/transport cycling in Ireland or greenways...
@irishcycle how fully Island of Ireland are ya?
@ColmDonoghue re the north? To be honest, not a huge amount from NI and not much all in the last year, but that might be partly down to less happening there with Stormont in limbo and a few contacts up there being less active than a few years ago.
Re Dublin vs the rest of the Republic: I aim to get a good balance -- it's hard to fully gauge it as a lot more is happening in Dublin in terms of cycle routes, bike share, etc and the number of cyclists there vs elsewhere.
@ColmDonoghue Also Dublin councils seem to be more transparent -- ie more likely to have webcasts and recordings of meetings, files online etc and there's a feedback loop of more cyclists already in the city, so, more readers there send me things to cover.
@irishcycle: I am looking at giving up the car and start commuting to work via Bus Eireann plus cycling. What is it like? I am looking at getting a folding bike.
Do I have to ask the bus driver to open the hold if I have my bike?
Am I guaranteed to always be last on the bus to get a seat?
Am I at a disadvantage compared to non bike wealding commuters?
@coraven I don't have direct experience of commuting on Bus Eireann, only intercity.
While everything is at the discretion of drivers, generally folding bikes are seen as luggage once they are folded and in their cover. I think I've only heard or experienced issues when the bikes aren't in covers.
Can you borrow a folding bike from anybody and try it?
@irishcycle I understand that uncovered bikes are treated as full bikes and you are hit with a €10 charge per journey.
I cannot borrow a bike, and it would be a waste to buy one if it does not work out. Maybe someone else can share their experiences?
@coraven I've boosted your post and also asked on twitter: https://twitter.com/IrishCycle/status/1690286345946624000?t=gj28jsyzY3fnJmOj05QIpw&s=19
@coraven @irishcycle suggest you ask @brianleddin who has a folding bike & brings it on public transport m. I have one too but haven’t brought it on bus or train (yet).
@irishcycle @coraven As I said over in the other place, you can roll up a large garbage bag and keep it in one of the two parts of the open top tube of a Brompton. I use this to conceal that it's a bike whenever I get any bus now. I don't commute by Bus Éireann though.
@dermotryanie @irishcycle Thanking you for this. It seems however like far too much hassle to be doing twice a day as part of a commute.
@irishcycle After 2 years of operations, what is the QPark Bike Parking experience like in 2023?
Is it suitable for a commuter in Dublin?
What kind of availability is there for new applicants?

@irishcycle will 2024 see the completion of the cycle route from Phibsboro to Galway?
@ownohmanny not likely, maybe 2025/6.
Fingal's section still hasn't gone to formal planning (be it ABP or Part 8) and Dublin City Council is still revising from Phibsborough to Ashtown plans (I'm not sure why -- it really just needs widening and resurfacing).
