I have been meaning to take photos of my new fabric before it became laundry, but I've been very busy, and the days I haven't been busy had been overcast and pissing rain; very bad light. So laundry it is.
Instead taking my own I shall post the store photos, a mini review of each piece, and what it's gonna (probably) become.
This is shaping up to be a long thread so mute me for a couple of hours if it's too much.
Without further ado here's my latest fabric haul!
All of the fabric in this thread is from Les Coupons de St Pierre. I used to buy from Minerva Crafts in the UK, but they were absolute dicks about VAT after Brexit so I had to find a new supplier. And I couldn't be happier!
Les Coupons de St Pierre only sell fabric in 3m lengths, which saves time and money, and often source from deadstock. I have been delighted with choice and prices.
Fabrics in this thread were €20 a coupon, about €6.65/m with only one exception.
We start with the viscose. I'm an absolute sucker for the heft and the softness of viscose jersey. Ordinarily plain viscose jersey starts at €8-€10 a meter so when I see it any cheaper I buy it in an instant.
I scored two plains, black and brick orange, and both are lovely quality. Great weight, no obvious marks, and 40% stretch.
I'm in a desperate need of plain tees, especially long sleeved, so that's the intention for this fabric.
The one coupon that's a little pricier is this beauty, at €25 for 3m. I have been looking at it for a whole year and trying to find an excuse to buy it. I'm a sucker for viscose jersey, AND I'm also a sucker for the mustard and navy contrast. It's just so pretty.
I don't have a plan for this fabric, it's a pure whim. I have a feeling it wants to become a knee length wrap dress but I'm undecided.
I almost wish I got more of it so I could just make all the things!
We're onto cottons now, and finishing knit block with this plain black Ponte Milano. Ponte Milano is heavier than Ponte Roma and I had good luck with poly and viscose ones I got from this shop before.
This one however is heavier still and 100% cotton per the label. It feels slightly rough and I'm not convinced it will have good recovery.
I was gonna make a dress, but all depends on recovery tests. Maybe something with structure instead? No knees or elbows for sure.
I said we're finishing the knit section but I'm a dumbass. I completely forgot about this absolutely stunning piece of swimsuit fabric.
It's ridiculous. Nobody needs 3m of swimsuit fabric. But just as I was about to check out the shop added this marvelous beauty and I had to have it.
And also I need a new swimsuit. It's going to be a Jalie racerback like my last one, and I'm going to use remnants of the black fabric from the previous swimsuit for contrast panels.
The viscose and the ponte are now laundered and I have discovered The Tragedy: the beautiful print viscose bled right into the yellow and white print It's all looking blued and dull now. I'm having a sad about it.
At least I was careful and it didn't ruin anything else. I'll try to rewash with a colour catcher or something and see if it will get better?
This took some wind out of my sails. I'll get onto the wovens probably tomorrow.
I have rewashed the printed viscose jersey in higher temperature with copious amounts of Vanish, but to little effect. It's a little better, no longer looks "mank" but lost all of its contrast. I've hung it to dry for now.
I have scoured the internets and thank all the quilters who have posted solutions to bleeding fabrics I have some steps forward.
Meanwhile does anyone know what's the maximum temperature viscose with elastane will take before degrading?
I'm gonna take some samples from the length and put them through some scientific testing.
Remembering from Myth Busters: "the only difference between screwing around and science is writing it down".
I have a hypothesis that rinsing the whole thing through a lot of much hotter water will help. Given it's not a garment yet, I'm not too worried about shrinkage, but worried about making the print quality even worse.
Enough troubleshooting now! Back to joy.
Himself has expressed a desire for a made-to-measure shirt, now I successfully completed one of mine, and we found a pattern he liked. I showed him some cottons from my stash and he liked the Oxford best.
Oxford cotton has different coloured weft and wrap, resulting in a subtle pattern in what looks like a plain colour. Fancy.
He selected one in "steel" but I thought it greenish, so took a navy blue with ecru weft as well.
But a surprise! Either through a packing mistake, or a deliberate offloading onto unsuspecting recipients I have also gotten a coupon of another Oxford cotton in what the shop refers to as "apricot" but in person I would describe as "tomato sauce won't wash out". Not my colour at all.
I couldn't possibly be arsed to send it back, especially now that I already know I have a dud in this order. It's 100% cotton so it's gonna go into a dye bath.
And so we reach the end, keeping the best for last. Another 100% cotton, but I mean, look at this. It's a satin jacquard in white and navy woven into a chevron pattern.
I audibly GASPED seeing it in the shop AND €20?? You'd have physically restrain me to stop me from buying it.
It arrived somehow even better than on the photos. It's very light without being transparent. Shiny, but not in your face. Super soft.
I'm afraid to wash it now tho
And that's it! The whole haul. Five knits, four wovens, of which one dud and one unexpected.
Totalling in a terrifying length of 27 meters running my already bulging stash is never gonna forgive me
@jjcelery I need to ask you one day for some vocabulary. As my overall English is quite well, I am lacking in the area of craft of sewing
Like, what "recovery" means in this context? Is there a Polish world for that?
@jjcelery Dzięki, wiem o co chodzi :)
BTW, samo zjawisko rozciągania obecnie chyba jest nazywane odkształcaniem. Ale pamiętam, że kiedyś się mówiło, że coś jest powypychane w łokciach/kolanach.
@jjcelery What a lovely print
@jjcelery Oh no I was so enjoying this thread and then BAM!
Good luck, fingers crossed it's fixable
@jjcelery super fun thread, thanks for sharing all your new fabrics
@inarticulatequilter thank you! I think this is nicer than all the fast fashion nonsense
