If you haven't read 'The Moon is Down' by John Steinbeck, you really should. A tiny novel written to encourage resistance against Nazis during WWII. Might even act as a gateway drug to his other wonderful books such as 'East of Eden' and "Grapes of Wrath'.

@jk001 Really, really love Steinbeck. "The Grapes of Wrath" made me cry in so many places. And I genuinely loved the whole experience of reading "East of Eden." I have read some of his shorter fiction but have not given this one a go yet. #books #bookstodon

@seanbala @jk001 I had early Steinbeck trauma (my mother sent me to camp with a copy of The Pearl and The Red Pony, and I do not recommend this) and had trouble reading him when assigned—but a few years ago I read Cannery Row and really loved it.

@tragicsandwich @seanbala Yes, I read The Pearl in school and it did nothing to encourage my interest in reading more Steinbeck. Rereading it a few years ago and it's really not one of his best. It was East of Eden that a sparked my move of his work. Cannery Row is also one of my favourites. He just writes people so well.

@jk001 They’re also not stories written for children. I was an advanced reader, but I have no idea what she was thinking.

@seanbala Yes, Grapes of Wrath was a tough read. Not that it wasn't great, but just to deal with the tragedy of it.

@seanbala @jk001 I also love the smaller stuff he wrote. Ever tried "The Wayward Bus"? Also the Monterrey books. Pure joy to get to know Mack and the boys.

@demerara @seanbala Yes, I really like Cannery Row (and actually re-read it a few wreaks back) and Sweet Thursday. I did start The Wayward Bus, but it didn't quite grab me, so I got distracted and didn't finish it. I must try again.
