Just watched The Swimmers on Netflix. Very powerful for anyone who cares about the plight of refugees across the world.

@bullivant

Wow watched this with my wife last night. Something oddly disturbing about that. LOL. Not the most Christmassy of movies, but a great one

It certainly humanizes the plight of migrants and the motivations that drive the risks unwittingly taken out of desperation or inertia

@mnutty Absolutely, Martin. We as a family do a lot of volunteering with refugees in and around London. My son, as an 18 year old, spent a year volunteering with the refugees on Samos (just south of Lesvos) so the film is very much part of our lived experience (other than the swimming and the Olympics, of course). Many people who made the crossing from Turkey to Greece have gone onto to become very strong friends of the family.

@bullivant

Now if we could just get folks to watch this who have a knee jerk low information reaction to , a few minds might be changed. What is often missing in the crisis is the underlying humanity of those forced to leave their homes.

A lot of toxic media in America when reporting on the make unchallenged assertions about the intent of migrants. The usual unsubstantiated fear based stuff: criminals, drug dealers, welfare cheats. All sadly simplistic

@mnutty I agree. You have the same thing going on in the UK with a brutal, dehumanising, attack on asylum seekers and those who help them by the Tories and the right wing media.

It's a tragedy on so many fronts, not least the fact that asylum seeker possess youth, skills and determination that could help the UK arrest its economic decline caused by demographics. 1/2

@mnutty Instead the Tories come up with increasing insane ideas like shipping asylum seekers to Rwanda at the cost of millions and millions of pounds. 2/2

@bullivant nothing like a red meat stunt for the vocal outraged

The real difficulty is coming as climate change bites harder forcing more migration

@mnutty You're right. We're barely at the start of the real refugee crisis. Western countries are in for a shock.
