Sunday morning. Late July.

Himself, a male solitary leafcutter bee, snoozes by the nest entrance. Warm summer breeze on his face. Hit the nectar a bit hard the night before and a bit worse for wear. Content in his slumber having hazy dreams of flowers.

Herself arrives back, busy busy, having been out foraging since early. Finds him asleep and it’s almost lunchtime. Miffed. Wakes him. He gets a fright (and knows he’s in strife) and reacts all shouty and loud. She gets louder and rips him a new one.

She’s having none of it and heads inside pushing by him. He knows he’s in the wrong and backs down - slinks off to the shed, head wrecked, still scrambling to compose himself. Meanwhile she sets about the dishes he didn’t do (all bangs and mutters). He ventures back in.

‘Love ya babes. The lads made me stay out. Did you do something with your hair? I’ll put those shelves up. Sorry. Babes. Sorry. Life’s too short…’ (it genuinely is).
