Understanding the scale of Russias online information warfare is difficult. Tens of Thousands of sites are created using a budget of billions _ these are created without direct affiliation to Russian Media but serve to have a plausible mix of Russian narrative and seeding of contentious issues to create polarisation in western countries politics. #RussianDisinfo #RussiaUkraineWar #CyberWar
Armies of fake accounts and online bots then seed social media networks with these same talking points /conspiracies - when questioned they instruct people to “do your own research” and then they Google and end up within this Russian maze of disinfo websites. Google returns the sites as they are cross referencing each other and fake bot traffic registers them as “popular”.
The websites are continually created as fast as western security systems identify and take them down
which is usually done in blocks. This is why the subject matter focussed on will shift over a few months from vaccines to immigrants to 5g to Biden WEF and so on ad infinitum _ the western “far right” and others in the grip of this disinfo system follow the cycle set by the creation and destruction of these sites in the battle between Russian disinfo and western online defences.
This is how Russia weaponises the wests open information networks and search algorithms against it. In warfare information operations are not new _ but the vast scale and nature of this warfare in the Information Age is unprecedented.
