Before industrial candy production, 18th century confectionery was an art form requiring specialized skills. Sweetmeats combined spices and sugar, intended as digestive aids for the wealthy. Ever tried sugar plums or crystallized ginger? These have roots in pre-industrial candy-making traditions when sugar was a luxury item.

Parution.

“William Shakespeare was a powerful influence on Robert Burns… I count as many as 16 references to Shakespeare’s plays in his poetry”

I was told that #history moves in patterns, in a comforting pendulum, as a metronome tapping back & forth between illusion & authenticity. A tidy appeal, like a child's mobile above the cradle of civilization. But this so-called progression of metaphors is less a dialectic & more of a carousel of self-deception.
The 18th century adored the metaphor of the stage cuz it rightly sensed the artificiality of social life.

Byron’s poem ☝️ borrows from the Scottish song “The Jolly Beggar” – often attributed to King James V (who reputedly liked to disguise himself as “the Gudeman of Ballangeich” to enjoy amorous adventures)
