18 months on from the American Chemical Society's (#ACS) intention to introduce an 'article development charge' (ADC) -- and this @cOAlitionS_OA repudiation of the #ADC concept -- institutions in the UK (along with Jisc) remain locked in sector negotiations with ACS on a new 'read & publish' agreement for 2025/2026. Other jurisdictions are likely in a similar position.
I remain deeply concerned that institutions will simply acquiesce to the ADC concept....

Yay! I got #ACS chars to print using #ncurses from inside #commonlisp using #cffi
I stole the code from #croatoan !
This means I can use more extended characters in a text interface than just ascii.
Like for example the you can create nice borders with the specific border characters.
C programmers won't be impressed because you can do it right from
C ncurses. But using cffi it is not so obvious because it is implemented using
C macros, and what types and what is happening to go from the symbolic
name of the character to the character itself is not clear. (to me)

The Department of #Chemistry at Middle #Tennessee State #University was honored to host the 2025 President of the American Chemical Society and Nashville native, Dr. Dorothy Phillips. She gave an inspiring presentation on her “Journey to Leadership in the ACS” to kick-off #WomensHistoryMonth at #MTSU. In the large in-person and Zoomed-in audience were faculty and students, members of the #Nashville Section of the #ACS, and members of her extended family.

On est d'accord.. et c'est pas comme si il n'existait pas déjà des myriades de solutions pour ne pas engraisser des régimes autoritaires et/ou empoisonner des territoires complets (mines de phosphate au maroc) avec l'agroécologie: le non labour #acs, non pesticides, pas d'engrais de synthèse, #scv, haies, agroforesterie..
(c'est pas avec le résultat des élections européennes et des chambre d'agriculture que ça va évoluer malheureusement)

Ils devraient aussi réclamer le passage en agriculture de conservation des sols (#ACS), le labour étant un des facteurs principaux provoquant l'imperméabilisation des sols agricoles (semelle de labour : absorption de 10 à 2mm/h sur sol labouré..)

C'est quand même étonnant que les spécialistes qui analysent les multiples causes de l'effet catastrophique des précipitations ne parlent jamais du labour alors qu'on voit son effet sur toutes les photos d'inondations : l'eau boueuse et dans les cas extrêmes, les coulées de boues qui décuplent la force destructrice de l'eau.
Le labour à 2 actions :
- il empêche la formation d'agrégat argilo-humique par la destruction des annélides (ver de terres) qui permettent au sol de garder une structure stable (qui ne s'émiette pas) même sous la pluie. La perte de sol en france va de 0,1 t/h/an à 50 t/h/ an et avec des pics à 300t lors de gros épisodes pluvieux..

Si on prends l'exemple des agriculteurs, des têtes pensantes on mis en place après la 2de guerre mondiale le système conventionnel agrochimique actuel (top-down). Les agriculteurs ont suivi ce système et s'y sont peu peu enlisés. Et maintenant, il y a plutôt un effet bottom-up (on espère) avec un nombre croissant qui renouvelent leurs pratiques, notamment en grande culture avec l'#acs et en élevage avec des pâturages tournant dynamiques sur des paddoks riches en haies. Il y a aussi le mouvement du maraîchage sol vivant qui prend de l'ampleur (#msv) chez les nouveaux professionnels.
