The final port on our week-long 2016 Mediterranean cruise on Royal Princess was to Mykonos and upon arriving we headed off almost immediately by boat to nearby Delos to take a look at this exposed, quiet island littered with ruins and artefacts from numerous extensive archaeological excavations. Truly one of those places that puts you in awe especially in some of the more open areas and away from any other visitors to the island.

We're standing in ancient Greek ruins at one corner of a square space around which there are walls ranging from chest height to twice an adult's height, made from rough stone bricks of a few hues of warm grey and dusky brown. A piercing blue sky forms the backdrop. This space in front of us measures no more than a dozen metres to a side and contains a mostly intact mosaic floor, mostly white or cream, aged by the sun, but while dusty black contrasts to form patterns of curling waves in two border blocks around a central design that's not full enough or easy enough from this angle to make out. There are three stone columns opposite us; one on the corner of the mosaic, one either side on adjacent edges. Each composes of three tall sections, lightly fluted, and each has a simple capital suggesting early age. A few tourists are off to the right side of the roped-off mosaic area reading an information board. It feels quiet and hot here.

Through a huge marble doorframe and across a stoa, the Athenian modernist interwar lobby of an office building, semicircular, unornamented but elegantly proportioned, with a lofty ceiling and a semicircular mezzanine balcony.
The high stoa with its circular white electric lights gives it space, despite being inside a building. The photo is taken from the other side of the stoa halfway down a high-ceilinged switchback marble ramp to a dark basement, as elegant as the entrance if even simpler.
It’s what lies above the basement photograph posted with this one.

Just a corner of an ancient stone wall sitting in the basement of a commercial building in central Athens, no big deal.
