For all of my illustrations in the past few years, I use 3D models to help with lighting the scene and some of the tricky aspects of perspective. Here is a look at some of my 3D reference so you can get a sense for my process! Also, I NEED you to see my flapper-inspired caterpillar.
THE UPLIFT WAR (1987)
Acrylic on Canvas - 26" x 34”
The first of two covers that I illustrated for the Uplift novels by David Brin. In his universe, it is understood that no species can reach sentience without being “uplifted” by a more advanced race. 1/3
THE WHITE DRAGON (1978)
Acrylic on Masonite - 20" X 30"
Although this is the third book in the series, it was my first Pern cover and I was determined to create the dragons as faithfully to Anne McCaffrey's description as possible. 1/5
THE DAY OF THE KLESH (1979), Acrylic on Illustration Board - 24" x 16"
This was the conclusion of a loosely based trilogy about the Ler, an offshoot of humanity that left Earth. One of four covers that I illustrated for M.A. Foster and the followup to THE GAMPLAYERS OF ZAN.
KUTATH (1980)
Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 27” x 16”
One of the hallmarks of C.J. Cherryh’s writing is her intricate worldbuilding and detailed portrayal of extraterrestrial races. 1/3
THE ADVENTURES OF LITTLE FUZZY (1983)
Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 22" x 30"
This was a fun assignment. I was asked to do a large-size children's book version of LITTLE FUZZY by H. Beam Piper. Not having time to do the whole book, I did this for the cover and PEEKABOO FUZZIES for the endpapers and arranged for my friend David Wenzel to do the interior works. 1/3
SHONTO'S GARDEN (1990)
Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 25" x 36"
For his novel THE INITIATE BROTHER, Sean Russell draws from both Chinese and Japanese lore for the fantasy this painting illustrates. 1/4

DRAGON LAKE (1988)
Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 30" x 20"
"Some come easy, some come hard," said Norman Rockwell, when someone asked him how long it took for him to complete a painting. Like him, I'm somewhat of a perfectionist. 1/4
Artistic Nudity

A quarter-leather book cover with marbled boards
Strange to think there may be people who have not seen such a thing. Marbling was also very common on endpapers, stuck to the inside cover and the start of the book to help hold it together.
Marbling is almost a lost art today; e.g. fewer than 12 pro marblers left in the UK.
Julia Rohwedder's work is gorgeous and this cover art for YA book, A Cold Tomorrow by David Sossamon, is no exception. And yes, all of Julia's work is created by her in Photoshop - no AI!
ZELLE 10, diesen Nerven zersägenden Pageturner von Moe Teratos mit meinem Cover gibt es jetzt auch als Hörbuch – stimmungsvoll intoniert von Roman Finster.

THE ADVERSARY (1984)
Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 28" x 18"
One of the rare instances when I placed real people into a cover illustration. 1/3
Tentative book cover for short story Fire and Ice, a kinky F/f fantasy.
What do you think?
