@knoppix95 this is nothing new.

#Lenovo almost always offered around €125 discount for "no operating system" and €100 for #UbuntuLTS over #Windows - if they offer any of those options at all

What is a problem is that Lenovo doesn't actually #Support even "#Ubuntu #certified" devices like the #P15v and it's #Intel #XMM7360-based #WWAN chip, the #Fibocom #850GL, at all, and they refuse to provide #drivers for it!

"A Horse with No Name" is a song by American #folkRock trio America. Written by #DeweyBunnell, it was released on the #WarnerBros label in late 1971 in Europe and early 1972 in the United States. The song was met with commercial success and topped charts in Canada, Finland, and on the US #Billboard Hot 100. It reached number 3 in the #UKSinglesChart. It was #certified #gold by the #RecordingIndustryAssociationOfAmerica (#RIAA) on March 24, 1972.

So, Google is flexing to create the largest e-waste problem. In name of security (aka, force people to upgrade to new phones and trash a perfectly working device), Google is blocking anyone using custom ROMs on their smartphones, even if these ROMs bring latest OS and security patches, long abandoned by the original manufacturer. Apps refuse to work if the device is not seen as “certified” on the Play Store. Apps refuse to work if they are sideloaded. So that leaves you with a device that can run Android, but you can’t use apps that depend on Google Services. Things like push notifications, payments, banking, gone. GrapheneOS has called them out for this move. There is a way to manually add your device to Google Play devices and then you need to use Aurora Store instead of Play Store to install restricted apps. But for how long will this work?

Time to port postmarketOS and Linux to my Hisense A9.

  1. That's due to #assholeism by the #devs & #publishers: If people refuse to play & buy that shit, they'll have to change.

  2. I've yet to see any concrete examples for real - plus the "incompatibility" can be mitigated by converting from #OOXML to #OpenDocument.

  3. Yes and no. Certainly #Linux support is often tied to specific #certified systems but any firm that can afford to license #Autodesk's Products can also afford to buy a Workstation like a #hp Z-series and a #RHEL subscription, because the users are far more expensive than the #Hardware and #Software they use. I'm pretty shure #LinusTechTips pays more for #cleaners or a #janitor even if both are externally subcontracted part-timers per year than for Adobe,,,

OFC the fact that Autodesk et. al. were allowed to de-facto #monopolize #EngineeringSoftware is a failure by #FTC, @EU_Commission and other #AntiCartel #MarketRegulators to intervene...

  • And even if we have something that requires #Windows, I can assure you from my own experience that a #KVM-based #VM [regardless if on a #Workstation or a Serverfarm like a #Proxmox cluster - with or without passthrough to dedicaded Hardware] is way less labour and pain-intensive than #BareMetal just from the #Backup & Restore aspect alone that it's worth the investment...

With that out of the way, let's go back to the trackpad issue. To add insult to injury, this laptop (or a close cousin of it: the NVIDIA GPU is slightly different in my case) is actually #Ubuntu #certified ubuntu.com/certified/202211-30

SO WHY AREN'T THE TRACKPOINT AND TOUCHPAD RECOGNIZED ON MY SYSTEM?

Does the Ubuntu kernel have special patches?

(Of note: they do work in the BIOS.)
