Jupiter Rowland@vulgalour First of all, "image description" and "alt-text" don't mean the same thing.

Alt-text is what's added directly to the image. It's what screen readers used by blind or visually-impaired people read out loud as they can't "read out loud" an image. It's what people see instead of the image if the image doesn't show for them (text-based client, too slow Internet connection, whatever).

Alt-text should never convey more information than the image which it is a replacement for.

An image description that goes into the post itself is not alt-text.

I don't see any rule or part of the "Fediquette" or "Mastodon culture" that speaks against adding that additional information to a reply.

Whether it works or not depends on whether your customers accept it or not. I guess that 99% of your aspiring customers in the Fediverse will be on Mastodon, only see your start post and not be bothered to check the replies. So my suggestion is to leave room in the original post for tellling your customers that prices can be found in a reply to that post.

But seeing as this will happen to you a lot, it may be worth looking for someplace that offers you more than 500 characters:

a Mastodon instance with a raised character limit

Pleroma (5,000 characters by default, configurable by the admin)

Akkoma (5,000 characters by default, configurable by the admin)

Misskey (3,000 characters, hard-coded; just steer clear of misskey.io)

the various forks of Misskey and forks of their forks like Iceshrimp or Sharkey (thousands of characters by default, configurable by the admin)

If you need a five-digit character count, the best you can do requires basically re-learning the Fediverse, mastering a significantly steeper learning curve and very likely abandoning dedicated apps. Here we're talking about Mike Macgirvin's creations from Friendica (200,000 characters) to Hubzilla (probably even higher) to (streams) and Forte (over 24,000,000 characters).

#Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost #FediMeta #FediverseMeta #CWFediMeta #CWFediverseMeta #Fediverse #Mastodon #Pleroma #Akkoma #Misskey #Forkey #Forkeys #Iceshrimp #Sharkey #Friendica #Hubzilla #Streams #(streams) #Forte #CharacterLimit #CharacterLimits #AltText #AltTextMeta #CWAltTextMeta

Jupiter RowlandTIL that (streams) has a defined character limit of 24 million characters, but until now, the database limits the size of the object to a bit over 65,000 characters. But nobody in my primary audience is on either of these.

The problem is rather the culture. It's a culture that's cultivated on Mastodon and on Mastodon only, that disregards the rest of the Fediverse and how it's different because nobody knows, but that is being forced upon that self-same rest of the Fediverse regardless. If your home instance is connected to Mastodon, you play by Mastodon's unofficial rules or else.

Sad, but true: The rules of one Mastodon instance don't apply to all connected Mastodon instances all the same. They apply to the local timeline, but not to the federated timeline. Other instances may have contradicting rules, and no instance admin is going to enforce rules that apply to other instances, but not their own one.

At the same time, however, Mastodon's overarching unwritten cultural rules do apply to the federated timeline because they apply to all Mastodon instances. And they're forced upon everything that isn't Mastodon all the same.

That's partly because Mastodon users don't even notice when something doesn't come from Mastodon, partly because some of those who do know that the Fediverse is more than Mastodon still believe that everything that isn't Mastodon is either an alternative UI for Mastodon with a couple extra features (Akkoma or Iceshrimp or Friendica is for the Web what Mona or Tusky is for the phone) or bolted onto Mastodon as an add-on otherwise, and it's partly because whoever is the biggest is the boss, and because Mastodon users tend to think Mastodon was there first.

Mastodon's culture includes not only a sufficient description for each image you post, but you're expected to put the full description into the alt-text and only into the alt-text. This comes from adequately describing images in the post text being technically impossible on vanilla Mastodon with only 500 characters minus the actual post text, minus hashtags, minus mentions, minus even content warning.

So for one, Mastodon users expect an image description in the alt-text. That's why I describe each image twice, once with a few hundred characters in the alt-text, once with thousands upon thousands of characters in the post text.

Besides, I expect Mastodon users to be highly irritated when they discover that I've put a detailed image description into the post text rather than into the alt-text where they expect it. Yes, there's an image description in the alt-text. But why is there a longer one in the post text? Why isn't the long one in the alt-text where it belongs by Mastodon's standards? Why do I refuse to do things like they're done on Mastodon?

Okay, so my full image description is too long for alt-text. But why don't I make it shorter then? Nobody on Mastodon writes image descriptions that are several thousand characters long. Why don't I write image descriptions like Mastodon users?

Also: While Mastodon is fully capable of importing and displaying posts that are tens of thousands of characters long, many many Mastodon users are very opposed to posts longer than 500 characters. They're technically possible, but they're culturally disliked and frowned upon. This mostly applies to those who use the official Mastodon app that can't fold long posts in and expand them if you want to read them, but it isn't limited to those users.

It's another cultural thing: Mastodon cannot post over 500 characters, so Mastodon users aren't used to over 500 characters, so nobody anywhere in the Fediverse must post over 500 characters. Mastodon users actually keep tooting that they want filters which remove everything over 500 characters from their timelines.

And not exactly rarely, they take matters into their own hands. If they spot a post with over 500 characters in their personal timeline, they block the poster upon first strike, but not necessarily without complaining to the user first. Some go as far as doing that when they see a post with over 500 characters in the federated timeline.

In fact, I expect entire Mastodon instances to have blocked non-Mastodon users instance-wide because some local user felt disturbed about their over-500-characters posts and asked the moderation to step in. There may even be instances, not even exactly small ones, that go as far as blocking the entire offending instance.

For these reasons, for me, posting images while having connections all over Mastodon is like treading on raw eggs. I spend 13 hours describing an image in 40,000 characters just to give a casual bystander audience a chance to understand them. I post that thing. A few people may find it helpful. To many, it makes no difference in practice because they don't read my image description. And then there's the unknown number of Mastodon users who take countermeasures or have countermeasures taken by admins/mods because my gargantuan image post disturbs them and/or goes against Mastodon's culture.

#Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost #FediMeta #FediverseMeta #CWFediMeta #CWFediverseMeta #AltText #AltTextMeta #CWAltTextMeta #ImageDescription #ImageDescriptions #ImageDescriptionMeta #CWImageDescriptionMeta #Fediverse #Mastodon #MastodonCulture #500Characters #CharacterLimit #CharacterLimits

Jupiter RowlandI'm tempted to add the following preamble to all my posts and comments. This would answer a lot of questions right away and maybe leave nothing unclear.

Preamble

IMPORTANT: I am not on Mastodon. I am on Hubzilla. Hubzilla is not a Mastodon instance. Hubzilla is a wholly different project in the Fediverse. The Fediverse is not only Mastodon. The Fediverse has never been only Mastodon. And Hubzilla is not a fork of Mastodon either.

Mastodon was not even here first. The first was StatusNet from 2008 which later became GNU social. Then came Friendica in 2010. And Hubzilla is from 2015 and based on a project from 2012. Mastodon was launched in 2016. It was immediately federated with all three because it spoke a language that these three spoke, too. Except for GNU social, all are still federated with one another to this day. And this is normal, legal and fully intentional.

We aren't the intruders. Technically speaking, Mastodon is the intruder.

Hubzilla has features that Mastodon doesn't have. Hubzilla has an unlimited character count where Mastodon has a limit of 500 characters. Hubzilla can create various ways of text formatting such as bold type, italics, code blocks, lists or headlines; Mastodon can display them now, but it can't create them. Hubzilla can embed hyperlinks; Mastodon toots only support URLs in plain sight. Hubzilla can do both quotes and "quote-tweets", and it doesn't have to resort to screenshots for either. And Hubzilla always mentions users by their full name, not by their short name like Mastodon.

When Mastodon was launched with its self-imposed restrictions, Hubzilla had had all these features for almost four years already. Friendica had had the same features for almost six years already. And many of these features, including longer posts and text formatting, have been available on all other Fediverse projects since they were created.

Thus, I will use features that are not available on Mastodon even though Mastodon users could read this. I will not refrain from writing over 500 characters in one post, and I will not refrain from using text formatting just because Mastodon users aren't used to that.

We were here first. And we won't limit ourselves just because you're limited by the software you're using. We will continue to make use of features that you don't have. Deal with it.

Unfortunately, the target audience of this, Mastodon users, won't read it because it's too long. If the Pixelfed GUI is capable of displaying alt-text in such a way that it can be scrolled, that is.

At least Mastodon, Misskey and all Misskey forks including Firefish have a hard cap at 1,500 characters. Longer alt-text is not folded in, it's cut off. Characters beyond that limit are discarded altogether. So if you write an alt-text that's over 1,500 characters, users of these projects will never be able to read all of it.

Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) don't have any character limits at all. Not for posts, not for alt-text either because alt-text is grafted into the image embedding markup code, so it's part of the post, technically speaking. However, even on a standard desktop display with no zoom and no enlarged characters, you'd be hard-pressed to display more than ca. 3,800 characters because the alt-text pop-ups can't be scrolled.

Last but not least, overly long alt-text is not good for the actual primary target audience of alt-texts, screen reader users. Unlike a post text, alt-text can't be navigated. You can't rewind to a specific point in an alt-text using a screen reader. If you have to re-read something, you have to go back to the very beginning of the alt-text and have your screen reader rattle the whole alt-text down again.

If anything, Pixelfed should raise the post limit. And the Fediverse as a whole should free itself from the Mastodon-induced "image description = alt-text = image description, full stop, no exception" mindset. For information that's exclusively available in the image description does not belong into alt-text.

#AltText #ImageDescription #ImageDescriptions #Pixelfed #CharacterLimit #CharacterLimits #Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost

Jupiter Rowland@💭 tinderness That was my impression, based on how a lot of talk about the #Fediverse completely ignores anything that isn't #Mastodon.

Many things hint at the Fediverse beyond Mastodon being largely unknown.

The full-text search debate is one thing. It's all about whether or not Mastodon should have full-text search. The opponents thought that if they had managed to stop the introduction of full-text search to Mastodon, Mastodon would be safe from full-text search.

There was literally no awareness whatsoever of the "peril" of just about all the other Fediverse projects which have been happily full-text search-indexing Mastodon toots for years, some even since Mastodon was launched.

Or quotes and "quote-toots". Mastodon users want to keep the former from being introduced because they fear it'd lead to the latter which, in turn, would lead to the same kind of harassment as with quote-tweets on X. They believe that if Mastodon doesn't introduce quotes, they're safe because they can be neither quoted nor "quote-tooted".

Almost all the other Fediverse projects that can do something like micro-blogging can quote. And #Friendica, #Hubzilla and #Streams can both quote and quote-tweet any Mastodon toot. They've had both features since their own inception. Awareness of this should rise, now that Mastodon can display quotes from other projects correctly.

Also, I keep seeing new side-projects pop up which their developers declare as "for the Fediverse", but it quickly becomes obvious that they were built against Mastodon and only Mastodon, completely disregarding everything else. Granted, this occurred much more in late 2022 and early 2023 when lots of hobby devs escaped from Twitter, got all giddy over Mastodon, built stuff against it and then, weeks or months later, were told that the Fediverse is, in fact, more than just Mastodon.

Or #CharacterLimits.

On the one hand, there are those who complain about users not being able to restrain themselves and absolutely having to write "toots" with more than #500Characters. It's pretty clear that they always refer to users on "hacked" Mastodon instances with a raised #CharacterLimit. They don't explicitly mention the non-Mastodon Fediverse as the culprit although they should because having a much higher character limit is absolutely natural everywhere outside Mastodon. If you're somewhere that isn't Mastodon, and you do as people on that project naturally do, you're basically required to put a "CW: long" #ContentWarning in your summary field so that Mastodon users aren't disturbed by your #LongPost.

On the other hand, I sometimes see people wanting to be able to write more than 500 characters. They always ask which Mastodon instances have higher limits. They could easily move to #Firefish and take everything with them, even more easily than moving within Mastodon. And on Firefish, they wouldn't have to ask around which instance offers more than 500 characters because absolutely all do. But they don't. It is as if all the other Fediverse projects don't exist for them.

And if they get replies, it's practically always actually Mastodon instance suggestions. Unless I do, nobody comes and tells them it'd be more practical to simply go elsewhere in the Fediverse where much higher character counts are guaranteed than to try and find a Mastodon instance with a modified character count. It is as if all the other Fediverse projects don't exist for all those who have read the question either.

Speaking of which, the "rule" that an #ImageDescription always has to go into the #AltText. Even a detailed one. A detailed image description doesn't even belong into alt-text. That's how things are done in the Fediverse, and that's how they have to be done.

It's just that they have to be done that way because of Mastodon's limitations. You've only got 500 characters per toot. Minus the actual toot text, minus mentions, minus content warnings, minus hashtags. But you've got 1,500 characters of alt-text per image exclusively for the image description.

Absolutely everywhere else, you've got several times as many characters for the post text than for alt-text. You've actually got more room for an image description in the post itself where everyone can access it than in the alt-text where certain physically disabled users can't access it. Absolutely everywhere else.

This is completely being disregarded. The only one who ever writes about this, that's me. It seems like the very concept is completely alien and unimaginable for just about everyone else out there.

That being said, I've got two on-going polls about how Fediverse users in general and Mastodon users specifically see the non-Mastodon Fediverse. The sample sizes are small, some have learned through these polls that there's more to the Fediverse than Mastodon, and some may have made use of a new feature in Mastodon 4.2.0 and "peeped" to see what's the "right" answer. But currently only 2% of the voters on the German poll and 4% on the English poll still believed that the Fediverse is only Mastodon. And 4% of the voters on the German poll and 2% on the English poll want it to be only Mastodon.
Jupiter Rowland@Jugular Malloy I'm still not convinced yet that every image can be described sufficiently for everyone to understand it in just a few sentences. So I think it doesn't always make sense to limit an #ImageDescription to some arbitrary maximum length that isn't justified by technological limits.

Unlike what many here insist in, #ImageDescriptions are not only for #Blind or #VisuallyImpaired users. They can also help sighted users understand images of topics they know little or nothing about. This, however, requires describing and, if necessary, explaining everything that the expected audience is likely to be unfamiliar with.

If people can be expected to be unfamiliar with everything in a picture, then yes, everything needs to be described and explained. On average, this is a rare occurrence; for me, it happens all the time, and the result is usually too long for #AltText. Good thing I don't have to deal with #CharacterLimits.

On the other hand, even while some people are fond of image descriptions that "paint with words", it doesn't always make sense. It probably isn't necessary to go into full detail when describing a typical real-life cat photograph.

qaz
Wrote a reply from my seldom-used Mastodon account. Pasted in my basic reply (when on PC, I make use of my editor, with its shortcuts and such): it’s 150 characters over limit, and I have to try to trim it down to 500. It’s like turning real sentences into basic grunts.

Fortunately this Akkoma account and my active Mastodon account have higher #CharacterLimits.
