In 1912 Ozaki Yukio (尾崎行雄), the mayor of Tōkyō, donated 3000 Yoshino cherry trees to the United States in the hope of promoting friendship between the nations.
A few years later, in 1915, the US returned the favor by gifting Japan hundreds of dogwood trees.

The weather in Seattle is gorgeous today, and it was our 20th anniversary yesterday, so one of my partners and I went wandering around the University of Washington cherry trees this morning for the first day of the cherry blossom festival. They're not at peak bloom yet, but it was still really lovely.
