click.actionnetwork.orgTell the Senate: Reject Trump’s IRS Commissioner Nominee Donald Trump is determined to sabotage the IRS and protect his billionaire allies from paying their fair share. With the resignation of IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, Trump is pushing to install Billy Long, a nominee who will gut tax enforcement, dismantle the free online Direct File program, and ensure the wealthiest Americans escape accountability. We’ve seen the devastating impact of weakened IRS enforcement before. Over a 10-year period culminating in Trump’s first administration, audits of millionaires dropped by 92% while working families faced higher scrutiny. Increased funding under President Biden reversed that trend, helping the IRS recover over $1.3 billion from millionaire tax cheats in less than a year. Under former Commissioner Danny Werfel’s leadership, the IRS made extraordinary progress: launching the free, online Direct File tax filing program that saved taxpayers millions of dollars, auditing 60 massive corporations with over $500 billion in profits, and notifying Microsoft that it owed $29 billion in back taxes. It also began better-serving everyday taxpayers and small businesses by eliminating the backlog of tax returns, cutting call wait times from 28 minutes down to just 3 minutes, and answering 3 million more calls last year than the year before. Doug O’Donnell will continue this work as acting Commissioner, but Long’s nomination threatens to unravel everything. Billy Long’s record is clear: he would serve the wealthy and powerful, not the American people.   As a member of Congress, Long "co-sponsored, in three consecutive sessions, a bill to abolish the IRS and replace the income tax, the payroll tax, the estate tax, and the gift tax with a 30 percent sales tax." This regressive tax would raise prices on everything from food to cars to healthcare and more―hurting working people while billionaires get away with paying next to nothing in taxes. And after leaving office, Long profited from a fraud-ridden tax credit industry that exploited pandemic relief funds. Now, Trump wants him to lead the very agency he tried to dismantle. The Senate must reject this dangerous nominee and protect the integrity of our tax system by ensuring the wealthiest Americans pay what they owe. Demand the Senate stand up for tax fairness and reject Trump’s pick for IRS Commissioner.

Henna #Virkkunen during the #EUParliament #Hearing as #Commissioner-designate for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy:
"What you said, open source and open standards, this is very interesting. It is a European success story, and we will continue with this approach. Data sharing is also needed and we have been strong when it comes to open source and open standards. I’m very willing to continue in open standards and open source."
