Microsoft thinks you should recycle pcs that can't be upgraded to windows 11...

Please do not do this. Try linux or give them to someone else who will, or donate them to charitable organizations.

Goblins need spare computers everywhere!

#question
Can we have a #hashtag on here for people who wish to discard perfectly good computers, so other people on here who are less fortunate can get them and use linux or something?

Any opinions on a best hashtag for that?

*edit @generationX mentioned a hashtag, #computertruhe (which is a group or the german equivalent to this paying it forward of computers or related parts, and is active on mastodon!) This may translate to #computerchest and is the best lead on a relevant hashtag for this purpose so far!

#retux (for games?)
possibly #upcycling

Unique for this purpose suggested:
#takemytech (at least 2 votes!)
#sparePChere
#pc2hand

by area:
@PCsfueralle for Austria, like computertruhe for DE

#LinuxInstallParty may be relevant! DE I think!

#FreeGeek for #Portland and maybe #Minneapolis !

#Debian 12 Bookworm made installation and GUI much easier than previous versions, including nonfree repositories for proprietary driver support! Debian 13 Trixie (stable) drops later this year. It is upstream and all about open source, as a Linux option.

Does anyone have ideas for how to fix a laptop after its screen was taken off? We don't want to put the screen back on bc it's broken, but snipping those wires made it so the computer won't start.
Apparently the wires they snipped were bundles of insulated wires and there was a bit of a spark when they snipped them, so I'm afraid there was a short. Would that make the laptop unfixable?

If you’ve got yourself an OG #Apple #iMac G3 and can't work on it because the internal sub-frame is falling apart, there is a fix on the way! I'm more of a PowerBook guy, but I'm dealing with some brittle plastics as well, but I feel for my G3 peeps. Check out Seth's video as he saves a machine from certain death with a pre-production replacement part. #retrocomputing #computerRepair #hardwarehacks youtube.com/watch?v=yWOSkVL-0A

My daughter's #Samsung laptop stopped acknowledging the existence of its #NVMe #SSD.
I took the back off, removed the SSD, put it back, and tried again. No dice.
On a lark, I did exactly the same thing a second time.
Now the laptop is seeing the SSD again.
Anybody see anything like this before and have an explanation?
I told my daughter to copy all the important data off the laptop ASAP and make a recovery thumb drive, just in case.

Some good tips here. Unfortunately, part of the problem is that #Windows and #Apple engage in #PlannedObsolescence by not supporting older computers' #OS. That's where #Linux can help...!

#VCFSE in Atlanta was amazing week before last, and I finally got the power supply and video cable to test powering on the #Comodore64 I picked up. It's the first one I've ever owned and I'm looking forward to the repair project. Freaking stoked!

It was listed as having a character ROM issue, which seemed simple enough upon preliminary research. After powering it on though, the symptoms look like they could also be a PLA or color RAM problem.

I haven't had a chance to crack it open yet, hopefully I can this weekend.

Has anyone fixed a similar situation? Do you have any advice?
