John HarrisYesterday at a <a href="https://mefi.social/tags/DairyQueen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#DairyQueen</a>, I was there but wasn't too hungry. Their menu offered a list of things priced at 2 for $5. One of the things was small cheeseburgers. I had a lot of carbs earlier and felt i should balanced it out with protein, so I asked for two of those.I also ordered a drink. Fast food companies always mark up their drinks way above cost, and it's gotten even worse since Covid, but refills help make up for it. The cost was $2.69. So, all together with tax, maybe around $8.50?It rank up at a few pennies shy of $10! It took some back-and-forth with the cashier to figure out why. It turns out, it was because the drink was _also_ on the 2 for $5 menu!Because that "option" was their, their system made it mandatory, and also put the drink in one of the 2-for-$5 slots, pushing out the hamburger, inflating its cost: the small hamburgers on their own cost over $4.GEEZ.

Their signage came off last fall. They're an old-style shop that only opened in the warm weather so no surprise when they closed up for winter, but the missing signage tells me they won't be reopening. I also noticed that the <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/ChristmasTree" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ChristmasTree</a> vendor that has used their lot for over a decade relocated up the road this past Christmas. No idea what might pop up there in future.

It was a cross of childhood nostalgia and new hipster salted sweet ice-cream all in one. It's surprising how Dairy Queen survives to this day without a rebranding or barely anything changed on the menu. I think the latest innovation was the Blizzard which was introduced in 1985.
