Phil M0OFX<p>Does anyone I know have access to a 9-track data tape transport?<br>Ideally one set up to work with Readtape?<br>A friend has some 9-track tapes which are historically interesting and we'd like to try and recover them.<br>They have been hit by mould/mildew but we think they could be cleaned.<br><a href="https://digipres.club/tags/digipres" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>digipres</span></a></p>
James Truitt (he/him)<p>That brings us, I think, to the real appraisal questions: </p><p>Would your institution have acquired this tape if the physical object had been the size of a refrigerator? </p><p>And if not, why are you adding this digital refrigerator to your virtual shelves?</p><p>4/7</p><p><a href="https://code4lib.social/tags/digipres" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>digipres</span></a></p>
James Truitt (he/him)<p>Man, I was just looking over <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://digipres.club/@tjowens" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>tjowens</span></a></span>'s "Theory and Craft of Digital Preservation" again for the first time in like 6 months, and I had forgotten just *how darned good* this book is.</p><p>It's the kind of thing where every sentence makes my head vibrate with how well it's articulated an important point.</p><p>Strongest recommend for <a href="https://code4lib.social/tags/digipres" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>digipres</span></a> folks</p><p><a href="https://trevorowens.org/writings/theory-and-craft-of-digital-preservation/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">trevorowens.org/writings/theor</span><span class="invisible">y-and-craft-of-digital-preservation/</span></a></p>
James Truitt (he/him)<p>Like, I would prefer not to spend more than 20GB per hr of video. Is that number just totally unrealistic for preservation quality? </p><p>I'm seeing like 100GB/hour from uncompressed MOV of SD VHS, and frankly I don't think the stuff we want to digitize is worth that expenditure of storage given its research value</p><p><a href="https://code4lib.social/tags/DigiPres" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DigiPres</span></a></p>

There's a new post on the Preserve Together Blog! In "Thinking About Feedback", Sharon discusses the importance of feedback, how it can help with digital preservation, and deciding when you should (and also when you shouldn't) listen.

Just found out 10 Stuffit X files in an archive collection (application/x-stuffit, StuffIt archive file 1.6-4.5, fmt/1460).
Aside from the fact this format has a really funny name, do you have any tips for listing the contents or extracting the files?

Continued thread
