I am back!!!
And I brought Jacqueline Jayne with me. 🤘✨

Make some noise for an awesome episode 🎉

After taking a brief pause, I’m back at full speed with my shows: Redefining #Society & #Technology on ITSPmagazine Podcasts — ready to bring you bold conversations that challenge assumptions and question the role of technology in our lives.

This is the first episode published for the 2025 season, but trust me, many more are already recorded and coming your way soon.

And we’re kicking things off with a big one.

🚨 Australia recently banned social media for kids under 16.
A bold move? Sure. A solution? Well, that’s where the debate begins.

In this episode of Redefining Society & Technology, I sit down with my Australian friend Jacqueline Jayne to break it all down. JJ is a cybersecurity and human risk expert, and she’s got some strong thoughts about why prohibition never works.

Let’s face it—does banning something ever actually solve the problem?

We explore the unintended consequences:
⚠️ Will this really protect kids, or just push them to riskier online spaces?
⚠️ What about the communities that rely on #socialmedia for connection and support?
⚠️ Who’s actually responsible for educating kids (and adults) about online safety?

Technology moves fast, but knee-jerk policies don’t always keep up. Instead of banning, maybe it’s time we start educating.

Question for the fediverse:

When you come across content/behaviors *you* dislike on the social web, what do you believe are the most effective and fair methods for responding?

How can you or other users express concerns while respecting both community guidelines AND foster constructive dialogue?

@thefluffy007 By cyber course, you mean courses about how to best act and protect themselves online, right? You’re not asking me, as a teacher, to teach math online, a field I’m not prepared to teach in at all by schooling or otherwise.

If you are referring to cyber, there are plenty of easy entry points into this for teachers. I put together a course, “Data Guardian: Cybersecurity for Educators,” that captures the essential concepts. You can find it here - courses.tcea.org

It’s the responsibility of every educator to build up their own digital safety and citizenship skills. And, since lack of skills means a failure to safeguard sensitive data, their employer should provide training that prepares them. How much preparation depends on the needs of the organization and its workers. #CyberSecurity #digitalcitizenship

Ok, I know cybersecurity awareness was last month, but..it remains important. As a tech director, one of the challenges was assisting staff in understanding how to safeguard sensitive data. Now, it often seems about surveilling people. Cyber protection is a basic tenet of digital citizenship. Why aren’t we doing more to empower children and staff to protect sensitive data? blog.tcea.org/cyber-protection #Education #Cyber #InfoSec #TCEA #DigitalCitizenship #EduTooter #EduTooters @edutooters

Hello #ScienceMastodon! I am an Assistant Professor in Psychology at University of Washington. I study #socialmedia use relates to youth mental health, especially in Latin America (mostly 🇵🇪 &🇲🇽). My lab partners with schools to 1) learn more by collecting data from students, and 2) work with teachers to implement #digitalcitizenship courses. More broadly I advocate for diversifying developmental science to better understand adolescence and advocate for the youth in the Majority world.
