An Urban Tribute to Frederick Douglass

A few years ago, a small mural was painted on a box on Grand Parade, featuring Frederick Douglass. Google Maps shows it was still there in 2024, but I’m not sure about it now.

Frederick Douglass visited Ireland in 1845 and was warmly received, finding a sense of freedom here that contrasted sharply with his experiences in the United States.

Currently on show @NationalGalleryofIreland a show of women member artists of the Royal Hibernian Academy . I hope it will not take a century for us to and give @aramark their marching orders. Many grateful thanks to @ellen_martin_friel for the assistance with this beautiful print and David Kirwan and Artisan Frames for framing it so beautifully.

People Before Profit welcomes people seeking international protection to Galway.

People seeking asylum are due to move into Ballybrit in the coming weeks. Our branch is ready to work with others to give them a warm Galway welcome.

We have confidence that the people of Galway will refuse to be swayed by malicious actors who want to deflect our anger away from the government and landlord class onto other ordinary people.

Why don't they have access to cooking facilities and fresh food instead of miserable canteens? Because the Direct Provision system is set up to create profits for those that can get government contracts to run the centres, this includes US company Aramark that also own Avoca so please boycott them, thanks!

@sinabhfuil will the Greens retain enough seats to be useful to SF? I’d much rather see a rainbow coalition than a SF/FF coalition but it’s all about the numbers - I suspect that the Greens are going to have a tough run of it at the next GE.

And for the love of the gods, whoever gets in next needs to tout bleedin’ suite. I can’t believe we are STILL warehousing vulnerable people in for-profit camps in 2023.

This also applies to people of colour. The fear of people who are not wyt, has always been used to Other, deny dignity & deny human rights.

This also happens in Ireland we are not immune to racist hate and fear stoking.

the first people are arriving in the new direct provision centre in letterkenny today

there's 60 families due to be housed there over the coming months, earning around €100 per person per day for bridgestock care, the private company running the centre

we've been getting ready for this over the past couple of months, now starts the real work of supporting and empowering the residents and, hopefully, helping to bring about an end to this abuse
