[17:49] What did the Moriarty Tribunal say about Michael Lowry, and why did it take so long for a file to be sent to the DPP?

The Gardaí have sent a file to the DPP based on their investigations into the findings of the Moriarty Tribunal, 14 years after it issued its final report. Coming in the middle of government formation talks between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Independent TDs, it has again shone a spotlight on what the tribunal found about former FG minister Michael Lowry, who is now an independent TD for Tipperary.

"Two things:
1- This is a photo taken today of the new military checkpoint which families from Beit Lahia and Jabalia and Beit Hanoun must go through when they evacuate. That’s where two in laws of mine were kidnapped along with two cousins of my wife.

2- I’m getting breaking news right now that the Israeli forces are opening fire at people who past the checkpoint and who were on their way to City. Dozens are wounded.”

etc. etc.

"The well-kept secret of academic precarity is that university teaching is subsidised by the social welfare system, through partial jobseeker’s benefit or family income supplement. Effectively, precarity is normalised and the exploitation of workers is routine, with the excuse that it is temporary, a prelude to a job, yet in reality it routinely goes on for years, often fruitlessly.”

The oft-vaunted grand coalition of the left will never happen in a cycle where one of the parties are in coalition with . You’d have to argue it’s therefore a central plank of their electoral strategy to ensure one or more of them are inside the tent to keep that from happening and keep the left split.

I’m not counting as they’re very badly tainted populists wearing a leftie skin.

Continued thread

I’m trying to understand why they won’t coalesce in a new party. Maybe it’s ego, tribal, but also maybe they’ve run the numbers and seen that their total performance would drop in share if they do. 2/2

Like it or not, the public perception is that and are indistinguishable.

This election it’s just incredibly clear from objective standpoint when you look at transfer patterns - for both FF and FG, about 50% of transfers going to second candidate of that party and 50% go to the twin party ie transfers between them are for all intents and purposes the same. “The meaning of a system is its outcome”
