Ulla Rajala<p>A detail in the garden frescos found from Livia's villa in Prima Porta, Rome, on the Via Flaminia. The site was rediscovered and explored as early as 1596, but it was not recognized until the 19th century. Now in the National Roman Museum in Palazzo Massimo in Rome. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/FrescoFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FrescoFriday</span></a></p>
The Partial Historians<p>💃A dancing Maenad is our pick this <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/FrescoFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FrescoFriday</span></a>. This stunning figure comes from a fresco from the Casa del Naviglio in Pompeii and is now held in the MAN Napoli.</p><p>Maenads were followers of Dionysus (or as the Romans knew him, Bacchus). This maenad appears be dressed in the most delicate and diaphanous robes that follow the movements of her form. She appears here as if floating in the air against a dark background which accentuates the ethereal air. She holds forth a narrow staff which is likely a thyrsus. In her other hand she holds what might be a mirror or dish. Her look is completed with a wreath and she seems to smile from across the many centuries.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/AncientRome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AncientRome</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@AimeeMaroux" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>AimeeMaroux</span></a></span></p>
The Partial Historians<p>This <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/FrescoFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FrescoFriday</span></a> we’re in awe of the deep saturated blue of this fresco from the House of Venus, Pompeii. It depicts what appears to a statue brought to life of Mars, the god of war. He stands on a plinth adding to the sculptural feel surrounded by bushes, trees, birds, and a brilliantly rich blue sky that might be about to turn from twilight to night. </p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/AncientRome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AncientRome</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a></p>
