We're in the Burren in Co. Clare again. It's a very special place. It is the only place in the world where Artic/Alpine and Mediterranean/Subtropical plants grow side by side. This is due to the unique karst landscape and its microclimate. It the home to about 1100 plant species out of the 1400 species in the whole of Ireland. There are also two butterflies that live there - The Pearl-Bordered Fritillary and the Brown Hairstreak which are not found anywhere else in Ireland. 🦋 Oh! There's also a really cute fox that my Dad has basically adopted. 🦊 😂

Yesterday the government published the draft National Planning Framework. The section on Galway City is full of sensible plans for compact urban development and sustainable transport.

The Galway City Ring Road looks like an anomaly stuck in there near the end, almost like it was added in at the insistence of politicians rather than something the planners view as essential.

A new bus service has been introduced for the #Parkmore area in #Galway, #Ireland, following the completion of the Parkmore Road Bus Priority Scheme. The project has extended the 409 bus route into Parkmore Business Park West, reducing bus journey times with the addition of a new bus lane on Parkmore Road. New bus stops have been created at Medtronic and Celestica. The scheme aims to encourage a shift from private cars to public #transport. Supported by the National Transport Authority (NTA), IDA, and local businesses, the service launched on March 9, 2025.

This initiative, led by Galway City Council and funded by the NTA, also includes upgraded footpaths, signalised crossings, and improved safety measures. The project is expected to ease congestion, improve air quality, and benefit the 10,000 people working in Parkmore. Future plans include a permanent turning circle and further upgrades as part of the Galway Bus Network Redesign.

Interesting to see this report on the housing market in Galway which was published around the same time as my own article.

We both agree that the ongoing saga with the Ring Road has impacted on efforts to deliver housing at scale in the city, but I think our reasons for coming to that conclusion might differ a bit.

"Galway ring road plans are preventing housing improvement in city, says leading estate agent"

A post I put up on LinkedIn last week about the Galway City Ring Road prompted a lot of discussion so I thought it was worth a more detailed exploration of the timeline of events which have brought us to where we are. Thank you to @irishcycle for publishing my article.

At what point do we cut our losses and admit to ourselves that this road is going nowhere?
