Mx Amber Alex (she/it)<p>If there's one thing in film history to mourn, it's studios being willing to hand amateur directors a million bucks and say "make us a good film, kid".</p><p>That's how American Graffiti was made: according to one George Lucas biography (<em>The Cinema of George Lucas</em> by Marcus Hearn), Ned Tanen of Universal Pictures had a low-budget scheme where he would greenlight projects from independent filmmakers on the condition that the budget stayed under a million dollars.</p><p>In the 90s, under the stewardship of Michael Piller, <em>Star Trek</em> (TNG, DS9, VOY) had an open submission policy, where anyone could pitch scripts to Paramount‍1.</p><p>You don't get this anymore. Nowadays, you don't get a foot in the door anywhere without an agent.</p><p>1) According to writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe, this policy was abandoned after Piller's death because Paramount feared plagiarism lawsuits.
