Happy #IntiRaymi to all who celebrate.
This #indigenous man revived Inti Raymi. Faustino Espinoza Navarro (Quechua) was a playwritght and linguist from Cusco, Peru. In 1943, Espinoza and a research team studied chronicles, anthropology, and oral history, and reconstructed the #intiraymi festival after 409 yrs. Espinoza would act as its 1st Inca. He and the govt had the performance at Sacsayhuamán ruins om June 24, 1944, with success. Inti Raymi was then celebrated every year since. Sign up for my Andean classes (linkin.bio/newamauta)

For the #Quechua (AKA #Inca or #Inka) people, the winter solstice was the time of #IntiRaymi, traditionally the biggest celebration of the year. It was the darkest time of year, which meant that it was about to get brighter, sunnier, and warmer. This was all tied to the rebirth of #Inti, the god of the sun, and lasted for nine days before the Spanish banned it.

Drat, the traditional date on #IntiRaymi was yesterday and I forgot to make a thread. Darn timezones.
It is known that pre-Avestan Iranian cultures also just had summer and winter, and the same may have been true of the earliest Sumerians. Under this system, starting the year with one of the equinoxes makes sense, since it marks the beginning of the brighter (Spring) or darker (Autumn) half of the year.
However, this is not universal; #IntiRaymi, the #Quechua New Year celebration, was traditionally tied to the Winter Solstice.
