Robert FairheadI heard Phillip Adams talking with Lorin Clarke on Late Night Live in February about her dad, John Clarke, and the memoir she'd published in 2023 about growing up with him, "Would That Be Funny?" (link to the episode below). Like most, I loved John Clarke's satire, especially "Clarke and Dawe" and "The Games", and was saddened to hear of his sudden death in 2017. Listening to Lorin relate tales about her dad and family inspired me to search for the audiobook version of her memoir. However, I had to wait until March for Audible to release the ABC Audio publication. And I've been richly rewarded for the wait! As the blurb says:Lorin Clarke, author of the celebrated podcast The Fitzroy Diaries brings to life her idyllic, hilarious and deeply nerdy childhood, and in doing so reveals not only the private man behind satirist John Clarke but the sense of love and security that comes from being able to laugh at yourself.The audiobook is narrated by Lorin, who has a wonderful way with words and delivery. Her dad would be proud of her, and if you listen to (or read) the memoir, you'll know that's not being patronising but something Lorin (and John) would appreciate.Like me, you may laugh and shed a tear (or two!) over "Would That Be Funny?"
