In it, the authors show how the life stories of Portuguese and Spanish labourers crossed paths several times in Nazi Germany.

Abstract in French: “De l’Espagne de l’entre-deux-guerres à l’Allemagne nazie, les parcours de vie de Portugais et Espagnols se croisent à plusieurs reprises. D’abord dans l’armée républicaine espagnole, puis dans les camps d’internement français, puis encore dans les usines du IIIe Reich après l’été 1940. À l’IG Farben, de Bitterfeld, un Portugais, ancien de l’Espagne républicaine, recruté au camp du Vernet, témoigne de l’arrivée et du séjour des Espagnols de la CIPETA (Commission interministérielle permanente pour l’envoi de travailleurs en Allemagne), à l’automne 1941. Ventured across the Irwell to visit Salford. Our walk included a visit to Bexley Square. Here in 1931 citizens of Salford who were protesting against cuts in unemployment benefit were attacked by mounted police wielding batons. This event features in the novel 'Love on the Dole' and the film of the same name.

'His business brought him to Scotland where he bought the New Lanark cotton mills for himself and his partners. There he initiated a great experiment in community building on which his fame rests. His work there entitles him to be called the pioneer in factory reform, the father of distributive co-operation, and the founder of nursery schools. His reputation was such that he was invited to advise on what should be done to meet the industrial crisis which followed the end of the Napoleonic Wars.' -- James Frederick Rees
