I think Varadkar did very well on Brexit and covid. The Taoiseach of the day can also claim credit for a strong economy. The housing crisis will go down as his great failure. The health system, given the funding that has gone into it, feels like a failure as well.

Overall, I thought he was a capable and intelligent Taoiseach who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind and give his opinion.

Time for a big change to fix housing, either now or in an election.

Mr Varadkar said that after “some soul searching” he felt a new leader would be better placed to get the Government re-elected.

“And after seven years in office, I don’t feel like the best person for that job.”

Fair play to him. I thought only female leaders had the sense to know when it’s time to go without needing to be dragged out of it. I firmly believe that you should go into every job with an idea of what you are in it for and when you might be done.
