Something from the travel archives. This is the French village of Les Baux-de-Provence situated on a rocky outcrop of hills and mountains in the Provence region (which you could probably guess). It's from here that we get the term bauxite as aluminium ore was discovered here in 1821. A thoroughly charming place of narrow alleys and climbing streets and stone buildings with wide views over the landscape below.

An idyllic scene in a very obviously European village with medieval origins. It's very bright and sunny. We're on a narrow street with a cobbled surface, to the left of which is a long stone building of at least three storeys. A shop selling bags is the first of a few local businesses working from here, and beyond it are signs of a café which is supported by the small tables and chairs under parasols and the shade of some narrow, not overly-leafy trees opposite and to our right. There are people sat enjoying something to eat and drink and a few people on the street, clearly keeping to any of the shade afforded but there's not a lot of that as the sun is directly overhead. The street rises slowly in the distance and there's more sign of medieval buildings further along and higher up. Beyond some of the trees to the right we can see distant landscape of fields and hills that lets us know we're at a high altitude ourselves; a quiet, warm village setting in the south of Europe somewhere.
