Stan Carey<p>&quot;Life was unendurable, and yet everywhere it was endured.&quot; —Lorrie Moore, A Gate at the Stairs </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/LorrieMoore" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LorrieMoore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/reading" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>reading</span></a></p>
Stan Carey<p>&quot; &#39;Thanks, maybe later?&#39; I said with the question mark our generation believed meant politeness but which baffled our parents.&quot; —Lorrie Moore, A Gate at the Stairs</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/LorrieMoore" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LorrieMoore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/politeness" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>politeness</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/language" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>language</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/speech" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>speech</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/communication" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>communication</span></a></p>
Stan Carey<p>&quot;I was working on a laugh that was more than my usual pleased grunt, but all I had right now was a kind of blast that culminated in a bleat.&quot; —Lorrie Moore, A Gate at the Stairs</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/LorrieMoore" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LorrieMoore</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/laughs" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>laughs</span></a></p>
Stan Carey<p>&quot; Her features had fallen but I saw her lift them again, one by one, the way one lifts light porch furniture after a wind.&quot;</p><p>—Lorrie Moore, &quot;A Gate at the Stairs&quot;. Jorge González Belmar<p>Just finished reading <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/Anagrams" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Anagrams</span></a> by <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/LorrieMoore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LorrieMoore</span></a>.<br>It's a pretty strange book, and I'll have to think about it (especially the first section) to give a better review. But I liked how she played with perspective, what is real and what is not, as well as what strikes me as a commentary on the loneliness of (then) modern living.<br>Sadly, as I got a Spanish <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/translation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>translation</span></a>, it seem some humor was lost, and some had to be footnoted to make sense. "Lost in translation" and all that.</p><p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Jorge González Belmar<p>So, having finished a book 3 days ago, now I finished another one 😅 ... "Easy <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/Prey" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Prey</span></a>" (2000), by <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/JohnSandford" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JohnSandford</span></a>.<br>Probably the most fun I've had so far with the series and liked that it was a <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/thriller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>thriller</span></a> where we don't know <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/whodunnit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>whodunnit</span></a>, as opposed to the others I've read in the series. The humor was also on point for this one, and <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/LucasDavenport" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LucasDavenport</span></a> got some character development.</p><p>Now the question is: do I follow that with <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/LorrieMoore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LorrieMoore</span></a> or <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/JohnUpdike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JohnUpdike</span></a>?</p><p><a href="https://masto.ai/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookstodon</span></a> <span class="h-card"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span></p>
Anthony Rapp<p>Who are 5-7 of your favorite authors? Add them as hashtags so we can find each other, boost this, share your own, etc. <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a>
