I get a call tonight telling me my computer is ready for pickup. I made sure to ask whether they’d tried to trigger the problem. They said they had.
I asked them what they’d replaced. He replied, “everything but the battery”.
So my computer is not yet the computer of Theseus, but when the battery goes, it will be.
According to him the geniuses just “follow the manual” and that’s all they can do. And they don’t get proper training anymore, according to him. So he’s thrown his Genius Bar under the bus. But he’s also telling me I should be grateful that they’re basically “rebuilding [my] computer from scratch”. So that tells you what you need to know about how this guy treats customers.
I got in touch with Apple Support yesterday to figure out why my computer still wasn’t ready. They told me they were waiting on replacement speakers to come in. SPEAKERS. Why did my computer need speakers? They didn’t know.
I went to the store today and had a conversation with a manager who was defensive, discourteous, and full of excuses.
He either did not know or would not say why my speakers needed to be replaced.
Computer is back at the store with a priority tag on it. If they replace what they need to replace to fix the problem, the only parts of the computer that will be the same as when I took it in will, I think, be just the battery and the sheet of metal on the bottom of the case.

J'y crois pas, tout marche. J'ai remis les fichiers. Tout démarre instantanément.
J'attends de voir si le nouveau système permet de le débrancher plus souvent (sur un autre ordi, on est passé de "impossible de débrancher" à 3h d'autonomie).
C'est magique.
Pilotes Broadcom récupérés depuis la clé USB, et les 3 ou 4 dépendances avec, le tout installé en CLI. Je suis très fier.

Bon maintenant on se prend la tête sur pourquoi le WiFi ne propose pas de réseaux à proximité alors que les pilotes broadcom sont bien installés.
On ne s'ennuie jamais !

Nouveau grub tout neuf, mais une fois que je choisis Linux Mint… je me retrouve sur un écran "(initramfs)" en CLI…
Ah mais oui, suis-je bête : j'ai oublié d'à nouveau éditer le lanceur dans le grub pour ajouter intel_iommu=off dans la commande !
Ça a en effet débloqué l'installeur. Dans le doute je redémarre pour voir si le paramètre intel_iommu=off était vraiment utile.
Ah mais si je le vois en root, peut-être que si je me donne les droits à moi-même en ajoutant l'utilisateur de la session courante au groupe disk, ça va marcher.
Je tente un :
sudo usermod -aG disk $USER
Bon, c'est pas mieux. L'installeur de la Live Session ne voit toujours pas le disque… Les forums et moi sommes à court d'idées.
Pourtant si je lance un `lsblk`, la partition est bien en sda3. Alors pourquoi ne le vois-je pas dans GParted ?
Le mac a bien une partition GUiD mais elle est invisible aussi depuis la Live Session, même en mode compatibilité.
Arg.
Je vois une astuce à base de intel_iommu=off en paramètre, je vais essayer.
I do love how @linuxmint has given my 2012 13" Macbook Air a second life. Sure, the battery is non-existent (need to plugged in), and the SSD is well past its TBW lifespan; it's still a lovely laptop to use.
If I have the time one day, maybe I'll refresh the SSD with an adapter + sata SSD and a new battery pack. Need to upgrade to LM 22 soon!

This week, I had my #MacBookAir's display and trackpad replaced. Unfortunately, the repair killed the Macbook's firmware. The boot process was in a loop telling me to reinstall the system but then wouldn't let me, which according to several online discussion forums is a rather common problem after display replacements on M2 MacBooks.
So now I do scary stuff with #DFUmode and #AppleConfigurator.

@macrumors what inspires Apple to upgrade the processor in iPads first, instead of MacBook Airs ? Is it a misguided attempt to boost a difficult to sell product ? Is it volume issues constraining availability (if it was that it still ought to be MBA first) ?
